1946 to 1952 on London Road

I lived on London Road near Lloyd Road from about 1946 to 1948 and then on Hemingford Road until 1952.  Walked along London Road to Ridge Road School (Mrs. Clarke was my favorite teacher) and went to the Granada on Saturday mornings for sixpence or less. Tracy's Newspapers was a great place to buy sweets and there was a fish and chip shop on the other side of Lloyd Road. There was a stream at the bottom of Lloyd Road where I played being a pirate.  Mother and Dad enjoyed the Queen Vic on weekends! It looks like the lumber yard next to Tracy's where my Dad and I shopped for supplies is now a McDonald's. Glad Dad doesn't know that! Later on I went to Cheam Secondary before moving to the US. Special friends were Barbara who went to St Cecelia's RC School and Cliff Feather from Cheam. I really enjoyed walking down Wordsworth Drive and around to Nonsuch Park for picnics and finding conkers. Somewhere off Malden Road there were some baths where I took swimming lessons. It was a wonderful place to grow up. You could easily walk to butchers, bakers, greengrocers and even to a barber shop on occasion.  Mother bought me my first tie and long trousers from a haberdashery at the corner of London Road and Lloyd Road.  I went to a doctor on London Road near Wordsworth Drive. I'm not sure, but I believe the bus that ran from Morden to Epsom was number 156 and number 213 was a single deck bus to Worcester Park. Thanks for letting me share. RE: RE: 1946 to 1952 on London Road

I lived in Hemmingford Road. I remember the doctor because he used to visit in his very posh car, which I think was a Bentley!

RE: RE: 1946 to 1952 on London Road

Hello all. I lived in Kenley Walk, right opposite the baths. I started school in 1932 at Cheam Common Road School. This meant a walk to the Queen Vic and get the 213 or 245 bus. I lived next to my two cousins. We used go to the Rec to fly our balsa wood model aeroplanes. I was in Kenley Walk when the 'doodle bug' came down nearby, D'arcy Road I think. It blew our windows out, but as we had leaded lights very little glass was broken. We had an incendiary bomb in the loft of my uncle's house next door at number 25 - wqe lived in 27. Actually, at the time of this subject I was in the RN, for I volunteered and joined Jan'45. I had my first leave back here at the end of Feb '45. Later on, March 1953, I lived in Oaks Avenue, Worcester Park and it was from here that I was married at Worcester Park, St. Philips Church. It was built in 1876 and demolished in 1978 because of subsidence. As my grandparents, who lived in Farm Way, were buried there, I must return to see where they have put the gravestones.
