Jones Balers
Looking back from this photo is the site of the original Jones Balers factory. I have many fond memories of my early working life with a wonderful bunch of collegues at the factory. I often visited Herbie Ellis' shop which later was to be in one of the houses in this pond photo, also the Red Lion pub nearby.

Very Early Days
I was born in Rhosesmor Vicarage in 1948 - the first child to be born there. My father was the vicar and we lived there until February 1955. My handprints are in the concrete outside the kitchen window and I have returned only once in nearly 60 years. I loved living there and exploring the fields and "mountain"! I especially remember the sheep invading our garden and the freezing winter weather. I went into Mold to school by car and then by the local bus which was run by Mattie and her brother. Mrs Jackson helped in the vicarage and Sylvia Massey would sometimes baby-sit for us. She lived at the local school. Opposite us lived "Cariad"! and I remember the Roberts family at Caerfallwch as well as Mrs Evans and Jones Balers. My grandmother lived with us and there is a memorial to her in the church. A special person for me was Mrs Brown who lived near the church: she had a... Read more
My Home Town
I was born in Flint in 1946. Looking at the old photos in your memory archives of the 1950s, it brought back a lot of old happy memories to me. Looking at the Church Street photo with the Hawarden Castle pub on the right, the Red Lion to the left. The Grand Cinema to the left and at the top of the street the very posh Plaza Cinema. Also I see on the bottom of the street Pumphrey's old shop and garage on the corner of Holywell Street and Church Street called Pumphreys Corner.
I can smell the stench drifting up to Mount Pleasant up the Allt Goch, from Courtaulds factories of which there were three in total, putrid acid smell from the Castle Works spinning rooms.
And of course Flint Castle where so many happy hours were spent playing there by many kids from Flint.
I left Flint in 1982 to move with my job to a new area. I will never forget my home town, I am stil... Read more
Childhood Memories
I have very happy memories of a childhood spent in Mynydd Isa. I was only there for 4 years ('72 - '76) but I crammed a lot of adventures into that time! My friend Audra and I used to go cycling down Rose Lane and look a the 'haunted house' across the fields, never daring to go inside. (It was an old wooden building, derelict at the time). We spent many hours at the bonk! - the local playing field, and would walk up to the building sites in Buckley and climb in and out of the clay pipes. We also used to walk 2 chow dogs called Idris and Ady, (they were really big and fluffy) and used to walk to Bryn a Bal school, which seemed miles, and call at the shops on the way. My house was No 75 Mold Road on the corner of Mercia Drive, and I remember I had the room with the veranda above the garage. The corner shop at the top of... Read more
My Childhood
I believe that my maternal grandmother once lived in the pub called The Rising Sun. Her maiden name was Mary Alice Bellis - and my parents, sister and I visited the village during the 1930s. .
We stayed with family who lived in the Red House in Pantymwyn, and my mother and I attended a funeral at the Church where we met a Welsh speaking Aunt Lavinia.
I last visited Rhydymwyn about 2000 and on enquiry found the Red House which had been renamed Bank House. The green fields that I remembered surrounding the house now had houses built there.
I would be interested if anyone remembers anything about my granny's family.
Little Mountain
Hello, I am serching for any info on my dad, Charles Howarth Shone who lived on Little Mountain Road around 1945 - 1970. His father was Charles (Charlie?). They were related to Cyril and Olwyn Shone who lived on the opposite side of the road. I believe he went to Hawarden Grammer School and used to catch the train. Another relation is Tom Shone - I believe married to Gwen. Apologies for the vagueness but when you are young details don't sink in and as you get older you realise it's too late. Many thanks.
John Etherington Welch Rolls of The Hendre
Maerdy was the estate and residence owned by the Hughes family. John Hughes's will dated 18 June 1697 left it to his nephew William if his daughter Eliz should die without issue. Brother John left it to his 3 sons then Rev T Hughes's daughters, then on to Thomas Hughes of Tre Adam, coroner, who sold it to John Etherington Welch Rolls of the Hendre in 1840. Judy
