This photo shows my great grandfather's shop, nearly opposite the one owned by Jesse Boot. The shop has (on the left hand side of the photo) the name S. Page (Samuel Page) just above the wooden statue of Jonas Hanway holding an umbrella and the name of the shop was Hanway House; Samuel Page being an Umbrella Manufacturer and... [more]

Balloon Woods. Most people says it was a hell hole. Yes some parts of it was. But to a child it was good. There were more quite a few blocks. On market day the whole square was full of activity and people came into Nottingham from all the surrounding villages. In the foreground, in the area known as the Stones, is the pot market where goods were spread out among the straw.

Nottingham Photographic Memories
In this view of the market place, the Exchange can be seen in the background. This building was designed in 1724 by the mayor, Marmaduke Pennel, but was largely rebuilt in 1814. Behind the Exchange was a multitude of com- mercial buildings, including the butchers' stalls known as the Shambles.

Nottingham Photographic Memories
On the left is the Talbot, which was opened in 1874 as a drinking palace - it was filled with sculptures and bronzes. In 1929, Yates Wine Lodges bought the Talbot and it still remains a great attraction.
