Nutbourne Post Office Stores
My memories of Nutbourne start when we moved to the Post Office in 1966-67, I was aged around 12 years old. I moved to Nutbourne with my father and step-mother, my younger brother boarded at little green school in Compton. My father came to the UK during WW2 from Czechoslovakia and fought with the RAF.
My bedroom was above the shop at the front of the building, at the time we lived there the road in front of the shop was then the main Portsmouth to Brighton road and very busy day and night,. It took me a long time to settle at night because not only did I have the constant noise from the traffic to put with but I also had those horrible yellow street lights outside my window. The people in Nutbourne made us very welcome. I still have good friends from that time. Although since those days I have moved around a bit those days are my favourite times. Manor Farm
I remember hand picking blackcurrants where my mother and father lived and worked for Mrs Rhys-Jones. That was soon taken over by machine and then ended when Mrs Rhys Jones died. The farm was sold and the blackcurrants torn up. My parents still live there and I visit often.
West Sussex memories
Homefield School, Southbourne Hants
My brothers and I were day pupils at Homefield starting in 1955. My twin and I quickly departed to Grammar School, but my younger brother David was there for three years. Mr Taggart? was the Head Master I think.
Thistlebarrow Road
My parents Evelyn and Tom Williams purchased a house on Thistlebarrow Road just after WW2 upon moving from Birmingham.
Carberry Avenue, Southbourne
My parents Evelyn & Tom Williams purchased a home on Carberry Avenue in 1977.
Stourfield Junior School
Stourfield Junior School was an attractive red brick building with a large playground and a football field in the 1950's. I went to school here between 1954 and 1956 and remember my time fondly.
Long before the days of a "National Curriculum" we were taught by inspiring men who had seen much life during their service in the Second World War. They taught in a style that they knew would work to motivate us. I recall a Mr Brown who gave us craft lessons in which we were using sharp bladed knives to score and bend cardboard - imagine that in these current 21st century days which are blighted by health and safety concerns! I recall a Mr Rideout who drove a three wheeler Bond car - not only did his car have a "wheel missing" but he also had a spectacular limp which we nine year old boys fondly imagined must mean he also had a leg missing!

Watercress Beds
I have no memories of West Ashling but somewhen before 1860 my G/G/Grandfather James Hare started the watercress beds there. It was not untill quite recently we found out what we know about this family. My G/Grandfather George was not infact registered as a Hare he had his mothers name which was Mayhew. All his children from his first marriage were all registered as Mayhew's and were all born in the East End of London where George was a railway porter. We think he brought some of his children which included my grandmother down to West Ashlingin when his wife died in 1872. My grandmother lived in the area and married my grandfather Kennedy Larbey at Westbourne in 1890 and they lived in and around the area until 1897.
The family to this day still own and run the watercress beds at West Ashling and at Hambrook. George Larbey
