Fluids Lane
A demi paradise, Fluids Lane was at the far end of the village towards Glen Road, I think. It contained a stream, and woods. What wonderful memories I have of that place, nothing can compare, we played for hours damming the stream, climbing trees etc., away from home all day. The lane went on to the fields that housed the air force base, or aerodrome, and also the German prisoners of war that we befriended, hard to believe, but they were free to go to the pictures in the village. That was a little earlier, maybe around 1942 or so. I wish I could hear more about Fluids Lane.

RE: RE: Fluids Lane
It seems incredible these days but as ten year olds we used to roam from the Brocks Hill estate across the A6 and up Fluids Lane to play in the old buildings left from the WW2 airfield (still walk it now). I was always fascinated by the scrap yard at the beginning on the right that was full of old decaying lorries.

RE: RE: Fluids Lane
Sorry, forgot it's Fludes Lane and not Fluids Lane. On old maps it shows it as a lane that led to an area of large allotments/small holdings that seem to be held in some form of trust status.

RE: RE: Fluids Lane
First I think you will find it is spelt Fludes Lane. And secondly I too have some great memories of playing there. My Girl Guide group used to go there to cook some sausages for a badge by starting a fire with two sticks, but some boys always bought us some matches for us. There was one particular tree that I particularly liked climbing and my sister could never find me. We liked going to the fields at the end to do some scrumping and one day we saw a face at the window of this building and we were convinced it was a ghost, we never stopped running till we got home.
