Not 100% sure if it was 1966 or 67, but I do remember that the castle roof was covered with a tarp for quite some time after lightening hit the castle during a storm.

I remember the Queen's visit to Rutland in this year. I remember all the children from the local schools forming the shape of a horseshoe in a field/park? and the Queen being driven around the horseshoe waving to us all.

My name was Liz Shepherd and we were new arrivals. I remember Dick Broom in the village shop that sold everything from Brussell sprouts to Royal Doulton and was also the Post Office. The butcher would leave his straw hat hanging outside his shop when he wasn't there so you didn't waste time walking up the yard. The... [more]

I think the landlord's name was George. Can't remember his wife's name. The food was marvellous, the atmosphere and friendliness second to none. The Vista Golf was installed during 1969

The picture I have is of the family in front of their thatched cottage that my grandmother said was right across from the church. I would... [more]

Bridge over river/stream, Back Lane
I was born in South Luffenham in 1942, some time later (I must have 10 or 11) I can remember helping the butcher on his round, his name was Mr Lake and he came from Wing. He had a old blue van if I remember correctly. I can remember him stopping in the stream as it was still a water splash... [more]

It is a quiet day, but some repairs seem to be taking place to the left. The row of shops can be more easily seen in this photograph. Miss Payne, Qualified Optician (right), occupies a shop in a large but rather dilapidated building which has a hoist on the side, suggesting that this was a warehouse at one time.

Uppingham Photographic Memories
Until 1880 this area was the butchers' shambles, then replaced by the pump (in the shelter, foreground). There are milk churns on the cart outside F W Hart 'Family Grocer, Tea and Provision Merchant'. Note the errand boy's bike propped up against the gas light. There is a motorbike and sidecar up in the corner near the Butter Cross. Could it be the one bought for the police station in 1926? A boarding house of Oakham... [more]

School House stands at the corner of Market Place and Market Street. The Hospital of Christ, built in 1398, stood on this site, which was once known as Baresplace. School House was erected in 1853. This is the main entrance, with the school crest above the door. Shortly after this photograph, in 1928, music rooms, a library and more classrooms were added to... [more]
