William of Occam
My memory relates to 1977 because it was then that I first heard of William of Occam (from Ockham early 14th Century). I would think he should be the village's most famous son. It seems sad that there appears to be no memorial to him there. Although a Franciscan friar, he was also in trouble with the Papal Court for heresy, so perhaps Henry VIII would have had some sympathy for him. Occam's Razor is a major philosophical contribution to modern scientific thought. "Occam's Razor" is the title of a regular Australian Broadcasting Commission presentation popular current topics.
Surrey memories
Living in Effinham Junction.....1936 to 1958.
I grew up in Surrey Gardens, first at "Ceuta", then at White Croft. My father, Mr Crump, purchased the plot of land beside the footpath and the house was built 1947/8. During my childhood, Surrey Gardens was a rough road with many potholes, and our fathers became expert at mending our bicycles. The woods behind the houses on one side were our playground as was the Common beyond the station. There were no houses opposite the Railway Cottages, and I remember woods there, carpeted with bluebells. Also there was no road to Horsley through the woods by the bridge over the railway line...again our playground. There was one shop by the station, a wooden structure, presided over by Mrs Searle. She sold everything, only limited by the war time. There was another shop next to the Garage on Forest Road, which also had a Post Office Counter, and a Mr Marshall, further along, opened his garage once a week to sell fish. For most things it meant the bus to East... Read more
School-Maternity Home-School
During WW2 the pupils were evacuated and the school turned into a temporary Maternity Home.
The Doctor attending the home was only part-time, but always on call.
The Doctor lived a few houses away and at night time he hung a length of string from a bell next to his bed and out of his bedroom window. So a nurse could run to his house to raise him if he was needed.
Such was the case at 2:30am on the 10th of June 1942.
I was born shortly thereafter.
John E. Hutt, now living in Lewiston, NY, USA.
Just Down The Road From us
Our family lived in the village of West Horsley all of my life, I was born in 51, my sister in 49 and my youngest sister 56. We used to bike down to Ripley and Ockham. I went to school at Sir Walter Raleigh, and Howard of Effingham. Mum sadly died in 97, dad moved to Gosport and died 2002, and our house which we had an extension built on, games room and bathroom above garage and utility, was split back into two, and the extension made into a one bed residence that sold for 245.000 amazing!!!! Very fond memories of walking down to the football field and collecting logs for bonfire night, and playing over the fields, up the farm and in the hay barn, ah what fun, the barley mow, the twitten, and blackberries.....ah Loraine nee Soal
Teenager to Retirement!
I would like to dedicate this photo to my Mum, Sue Dykes who has worked in the restaurant at RHS Wisley Gardens since the age of 15! Starting with part time seasonal work as a waitress to full-time baking and is due to retire next year. Sue is well known for her delicious cakes and even has her own recipe cards which you can pick up at the cafeteria in Wisley Gardens. My great grandad was also employed at RHS Wisley Gardens as the Head Gardener in the 1950's I believe and he and my gran used to live in a cottage in the grounds.
Woodger. Austin,Stanley.
I have just found that my family on my grandmother's side came from Wisley. Some lived Ripley, Byfleet, and Ockham, but most Wisley. 1841 1851 records onwards. Their name Woodger worked Park Farm.Pond Farm. The Hut. Wisley Lane. Wisley Farm. Wisley Common. There was a James 1786 Ripley. John 1791 Ripley. And a Richard 1775 West Horsley. All worked on farms and in service. Great-grandmother, name Emily, same as my grandmother's. They were a large family. Yours, Ronald Stanley, Adelaide, South Australia.
Wisley
I lived at Church Farm, Wisley and loved it, as the country was nice, and I liked being able to play in the fields and on the farm, and collecting eggs. I also went to Wisley church on Christmas Day to go to communion after making comfirmation on 22nd December 1955.
