Warwickshire memories

1980s

I was the newspaper reporter for the Coventry Evening Telegraph regional office on Wood Street for a year and lived off Joseph Way on a new housing development.

I remember reporting on time share appartments at the former home of Danny La Rue, attending magistrates court and council meetings and eating at Pizzaland which was conveniently across the road from... [more]

Once my home

I lived here for two years in 1941/42.  My father rented it from Mrs Switzer who owned Bell Court.  I was ten years old and together with my parents was escaping the Birmingham bombing.  I used to fish from that very unstable veranda. We later rented a home on Grange Road in Bidford.

I used to carol sing here

This used to be owned by Sir Ivan Stedeford, and every Christmas the choir of St Michael's Church was invited to sing carols in the hall acompaned by Sir Ivan on the grand piano.

I lived here

I lived at The Malt House, Claverdon in the early mid 1960s. It was owned at the time by Mr Jefferson who lived in a lovely new bungalow a little further away. I loved this house even if it was a bit unusual to live in. I went to school in Claverdon and Miss Lewthwaite was my teacher... [more]

My Family

The Bull family, we used to live at 4 Duffus Hill. We used to go to the stud where my father worked, back in 1974. We used to go to the village hall for Brownies. We went to the school. We went to Sunday School down Middle Town Lane. We have got loads of memories of Moreton Morrell.

Palmer family of Preston Bagot

My great-great-great grandfather was Joseph Palmer, blacksmith, and his daughter Jane Plamer married James Ferris Cooke in 1838. They lived most of thier lives in Tanworth in Arden. Does anyone out there have any information about the Plamer family please?  My email is anniebrown5@hotmail.co.uk

William Palmer

On the 3 May 2009 I have to admit I had never heard of Preston Bagot. Shame, some if not all may cry. I and my daughter are researching our family tree. We thought that our family originated in Wednesbury in the Black Country. That was proved wrong when we discovered that my great-great-grandfather William Palmer was born in Preston Bagot... [more]

Leamington Spa Town and City Memories

Mrs Hitchman, widow of Dr Hitchman, donated the site for this church together with a large sum of money. St Mary's was built between 1877 and 1878 by John Cundall in brick with a prominent steeple. The interior is brick-lined. The tower was a mere 75 feet high and has been cemented over. In 1875 the old three-decker pulpit was removed and the font re-located. The horse and carriage gives a tranquil... [more]

Rugby Town and City Memories

To the west of Old Quad (above, 72159) lies Old Big School, surmounted by School House dormitories. In the shallow recess stands a pump which was used by the boys to collect their washing water until washrooms and indoor toilets were installed in 1922. The lozenge-shaped washroom windows can be seen (centre, 72159) on the south side of Old Quad. Cloisters... [more]
