Ash, the Lion Hotel c1955 (ref. A232015)
Until recently this scene could be said not to have changed, but the Lion Hotel, which is also a public house, was recently (in early 2005) converted into an indian restaurant. Just beyond the hotel a cyclist can be seen passing a casual conversation between a pedestrian and the driver of the car coming into the street.Add your own Memory

Ash, the Village c1965 (ref. A232031)
this pleasant view looks down the main street from the path beside the church. On the left-hand side of the road we can see the Ship inn, and also a sign for Regent petrol. One wonders how busy this petrol station would have been in those days, just 40 years ago! Add your own Memory

Eastry, Church c1965 (ref. E154014)
St Mary's Church is a very good and sturdy example of norman ecclesiastical architecture. it is said that from the top of the church tower no less than 17 other churches can be seen. Legend tells that thomas Becket took refuge here for eight days in 1164 whilst waiting for a boat to take him to France from Sandwich. At nearby Eastry Court are to be found a network of underground tunnels; these may be old mine workings, but they give rise to much speculation. Add your own Memory

Eastry, Church Street c1955 (ref. E154001)
it is about ten years before photograph E154014 (above) was taken, and on a sunny (Sunday?) morning three ladies walk along Church Street, perhaps to the church. this is another example of the peaceful village life of half a century ago. Add your own Memory

Wingham, High Street, south c1955 (ref. W407008)
We have our backs to the Red Lion, and are looking down the A257 Sandwich and Deal road, with Lloyds Bank clearly visible on the right. Some parked cars are in evidence; otherwise the scene is delightfully quiet compared to today. Add your own Memory

Wingham, the Dog Inn c1955 (ref. W407009)
Like the Old Canonry, this is another 13th-century building, its medieval vintage being visible both inside and out. it is currently a public house serving real ales and an imaginative menu. We are looking in the opposite direction from photograph W407019, so the Old Canonry is on the left just beyond the inn. the entrance to St Mary's Church is indicated on the right, and a woman is walking on the left just beyond the Old Canonry.
