Chippenham, Monkton House c1960 (ref. C294092) | The house is a typical Georgian square house with a fine ashlar frontage and hipped roof. The doorway is square-headed with Ionic pilasters and two detached Ionic columns. In front of the house, gardens and pleasure grounds ran down to the river; a channel was cut from the river for private moorings. | Add your own Memory

Chippenham, Monkton Park Golf Course c1960 (ref. c294102) | As the housing estate at Monkton grew up, the owners of Monkton Park, the District Council, began to develop the area for recreational purposes. Chippenham, New Road c1960 (ref. C294109) | These views, with only a few years between them, illustrate the widening of the road with the construction of the new bridge. A section of the old stone balustrade can be seen on the side of Thomas Cook & Son in C294109. Very little else has changed, except that Redwood Brothers, who sold men's and boys' clothing, has left; the building has been modernised, with the removal of a first floor oriel window. The building was occupied by Halfords, and is now the Oxfam shop. The two low buildings next to Redwoods have had a wide range of uses, from nurseries to restaurants. | Add your own Memory

Chippenham, New Road c1960 (ref. C294098) | We are looking up New Road, with W C King & Sons, ironmongers, on the left. Further up we can see the sign of the Black Horse. According to the deeds, this was built in November 1843 as a beer house. The large Bath stone town house on the right was the home of the Collen family, who ran the town mill opposite. In the early 1960s the Westminster Bank took over the premises, and it is now occupied by Goughs the solicitors. | Add your own Memory

In the distance the tower and spire of St Andrew's church is visible on the side of the Market Place. Chippenham, the Market Place c1955 (ref. C294031) | This view shows the widest area of the market place, where most of the livestock was sold up to 1907. The Victorian building with the borough coat of arms in the pediment was erected after a public meeting: the town decided 'not only to obtain funds for the purpose of a general rejoicing but also if possible, to erect a handsome building as a Literary and Scientific Institute, which would serve as a lasting memorial'. Sir John Neeld presented the site, and the foundation stone was laid in 1887. The Jubilee Institute proved popular, along with its collection of books. | Add your own Memory

Chippenham, Yelde Hall c1965 (ref. C294104) | The Yelde Hall had been recently renovated (in 1963). The double doors on the gable end had been removed and a new box frame infill with windows had been added, which matches the style of the rest of the building. The Yelde Hall had probably not been unencumbered by buildings since the late Tudor period. | Add your own Memory

Chippenham, the Old Town Hall c1955 (ref. C294011) | The stone-built building to the right of the Yelde Hall was a butcher's run by Greig & Co in the 1950s. Records show that there were butchers here back into the 19th century, linking the area with its designation as the shambles on the edge of the market. | Add your own Memory
