Broadstairs, the Bandstand and Promenade 1907 (ref. 58329)
Just below the promenade and overlooked by some prominent hotels, these visitors enjoy a sunny day. The feeling of the time was that ladies should cover up, so parasols keep the sun at bay. Add your own Memory

Broadstairs, the Beach 1918 (ref. 68482)
A large crowd is gathered on the beach in the centre of this photograph, possibly to watch 'Uncle Mac and his Minstrels.' They had blacked-up faces and wore a sort of clown outfit with pom-poms down the front. They played twice daily on the beach. There were song contests for the children, who sat on the sand, and the adults paid to sit on deckchairs. At night they played to an adult audience on the jetty. Uncle Mac was the older man, and played a banjo, and there were Uncles Jack, John and others. Uncle Jack was the children's favourite.Add your own Memory

On the left is the Albion Hotel, where Charles Dickens stayed before he bought the property overlooking the bay on the right of the photograph. It was known as Fort House, and Dickens lived there in 1851. Dickens loved this house, and called it his 'airy nest'; it was here that he wrote David Copperfield. Today the property is known as Bleak House, after another book by Dickens. Add your own Memory

Cliffe, the View from the Church c1950 (ref. C464009)
Once known as 'Coveshoo', Cliffe was a meeting place for the Great Councils of Kent in Saxon times. The ridge top village of Cliffe was constantly in the news during 2003, when the villagers and other local people fought a vigorous campaign against the government's proposed siting of a new airport at Cliffe. They were supported by the RSPB, who said that an airport here would mean an end to the wildlife reserves nearby. Add your own Memory
