Nostalgic memories of Palmers Green's local history

Share your own memories of Palmers Green and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Not sure what to write? It's easy - just think of a place that brings back a memory for you and write about:

  • How the location features in your personal history?
  • The memories this place inspires for you?
  • Stories about the community, its history and people?
  • People who were particularly kind or influenced your time in the community.
  • Has it changed over the years?
  • How does it feel, seeing these places again, as they used to look?

I came across the stories related to Palmers Green and was immediately taken back to my early years at Franklin House school in the 50's and 60's. I smiled when I read about the visits to Dom's Cafe, just a five minute walk from the school. My entire lunch money would be spent on a Cola float, Coke and ice cream with a cherry and a fruit pie for dessert! How everyone stayed so skinny in those days I have no idea! The ...see more
I lived in a flat over Walton, Hassell & Port in Alderman's Hill. Situated on the corner of Groveland's Road opposite Broomfield Park. Spent a lot of time in the park, on the swings etc & collecting conkers. I was living there from 1948 - 1956 (4 years old till 12 ). I went to Hazelwood Lane School. The headmistress was Miss Belfontaine. Walked there & back four times a day! Buying three pennyworth of ...see more
Hello everyone. I lived at 409 Green Lanes in1960. Does anyone know of an old folks home in Lakeside Road around that time, possibly number 59? Any help on how to find out would be much appreciated.
I fondly remember "Barrowell Green swimming pool. After the war it was on weekly visit. Now hears a thing opposite the pool was a old derelict house who lived there? and what happened to the house?
My grandmother, Phyllis Dearden, ran the ABC restaurant for many years. I would go and visit her with my mother when I was quite small and then, when I was a teenager, I helped her during school holidays by making sandwiches at a sandwich bar inside the shop to the right of the front door. I remember the big round plastic tomatoes containing tomato sauce. The green plastic leaves on top could be unscrewed to put the tomato sauce in.
fondly recall a Cafe/restaurant upstairs some shop it was opposite one of the cinemas
Special treat of afternoon tea at Pritchards, next door to Evans and Davies. Served by waitresses in smart black dresses with white aprons and little frilly hats. Lovely tiered plates of sandwiches and cakes. Palm Court Restaurant, upstairs on the opposite side of the road near Cinema. The smell of freshly ground coffee from the Home and Colonial grocers at top of the High Street. The ...see more
Today is the 7th July. Exactly fifty years ago today, I went to my local cinema in Palmers Green to see A Hard Days Night. I couldn't remember the name of the cinema, but it was on Green Lanes, near The Triangle on the east side. Was it The Queens? Can anyway tell me? In 1964 I had started working for Souhgate Council as a tractor driver, and cut the grass all over the borough including Broomfield Park. That ...see more
I attended Palmers Green High School in the late fifties and early sixties. There were no school playing fields so we had to go to Ford's Grove in Winchmore Hill for sport. One day I and a group of friends went to find Cliff Richard's house to try and get his autograph. We got into terrible trouble when we got back to school late and, for the rest of the term, we had to stay at school and write out ...see more
In the mid 50s we lived in St Georges Road Palmers Green my brothers and I went to St Georges Presbyrtarian Church for Sunday school and Hazelwood Lane Primary School. Going to the cinema on Saturday mornings was a treat to watch the Lone Ranger. Until they pulled the cinema down and built Telsco's. After the dentist located at the Triangle mum would take me across to Lyons tea house ...see more
