Not Actually A Memory But A Query...
There's a ruined church, still with roof but no windows and totally surrounded by overgrown shrubbery and a tall wall, just west of Glenlochar Barrage heading towards Laurieston. It's on the right hand side heading west and is in a little patch of greenery amongst the fields with only the roof visible from the road. There's an old green way up to it a few hundred yards long. I'm trying to find out more about it. Anyone have any information on it please? I have photos of it but I don't think I can add them on here...
Childhood Memories
This was the year I first attened Balmaclellan School, the Headmaster was first Mr Walker, who went on to New Abbey, he was followed by Fred Simpson - a great experence from 1944 to 1950. I lived with grandfather William McQueen Biggar at his shop and post office - a wonderful time in the village, curling in the winter, bowls and badminton in the village hall and Sunday School and Church on Sundays.
Railway Station
Does anyone know when the little station cottage got turned into? My mother lived there with Margaret Brown and James Brown, Jimmy as he was known, in - what do you call the street?
Help Please
I am looking into the history of King Street in Castle Douglas and have been told there was a church, where exactly I am unsure, but if anyone could help with names or pictures I would very much appreciate it. I have heard that it was situated near what is now a convenience store.
Scottish Young People's Orchestra, Castle Douglas
Oh my, happy times. Every Saturday was an exciting excursion from Minigaff to Castle Douglas to orchestra practice at Castle Douglas in late 1968+. Other members that travelled with me were were Margaret Whittaker, Jill Bannister, Fiona Simpson. Are you out there? It would be lovely to hear from you...
My Mother Was Born in Castle Douglas
My mother was born in Castle Douglas, her name was Anne Tompson. Her dad's name was Wilf Tompson. She had lots of sisters and brothers, if anyone thinks they are related, please email me. My mother is 74 now, she moved around a bit and now lives in Northumberland. I would love to hear from anyone who knows her. It's a great place, I spent lot of time there when I was young.
From Australia to New Galloway
I grew up with the story of my great-grandfather Thomas Handley coming back from India and living at Kenmuir Castle with his wife Agnes Gordon Handley (nee Bain). In 2005 my sister and I came to Scotland with our elderly mother to take her to see the ruins of Kenmuir Castle as it had also been a part of her life history. We took many photos of the castle to bring back to Australia and are continuing to try and trace the link Agnes Gordon Bain had with the castle. The Gordon in her name is the surname of her godfather.
