Pednor Riding Stables

I learned to ride at Pednor stables, run by Hilary with help from her husband. They had a motley but extremely well cared-for string of horses, which grew all the time. My favourite was a 4-yr-old exmoore called Kerry, who was sold and kept on ther in livery. Bubbles was cream with wall eyes...anyone remember the others?
Hilary has always been an inspiration and although I have not followed in her footsetps, latish in life I have begun to work with horses

RE: RE: Pednor Riding Stables

Hi Josetta, many many thanks for your comments, which have really brought out my nostalgia and made me smile a great deal today! Do you remember Bubbles, who sort of looked like a little Portuguese and had wall eyes? I, too, remember very well the landscape of Pednor and visited a few years ago. My identity is very bound up in it, too. Maybe your children aren't as passionate about horses as you are - I have a daughter who has never been riding (14 years) and really has no interest. It seems you are either born with the bug, or not - and if your kids haven't been insisting, maybe they are not too bothered. I was quite pleased that my daughter didn't want to take up something so dangerous! Thanks again, and all the best. Annie x

RE: RE: Pednor Riding Stables

Hi Annette. I used to live in Pednor, and can remember a few more of the ponies' names. There was Sparky, Seaspray, Beauty, Marigold, Maria, Jigger, Caravelle, Sara, Taffy, ..... Last I heard (Feb 2010) was that Marigold was still alive. Hilary and Anthony still live in Pednor, as far as I know, although Pednor Stables was sold to a private individual years ago. They still have "Badger Valley Farm" a little way up the road, where Marigold still resides.... I feel very very lucky and privileged to have grown up in Pednor. I still dream about it sometimes (I'm 37 now, and moved away when I was 18). I think that growing up riding gives you a really close bond with nature, and I felt that I knew every single inch of every footpath and bridleway for miles and miles around that area, and still picture it all in my mind. How I miss it! I have children now, and feel sad that I can't really afford to let them have riding lessons (yet...), let alone a pony..... Sigh! Dream......

RE: RE: Pednor Riding Stables

Annette, I grew up riding at Pednor Stables and think of it, and them, all the time! Thanks for the memories =) I do remember Bubbles as well.
Josetta, Sparky was my horse! I loved him so. We travelled so much we kept him at the stables and they used him there. He was good with kids.
Wow, I do miss it there. I too can picture all the bridal paths and roads. Yay for Hillary & Antony and all their great people at the stables.
I don't have children but have given my god daughter some riding lessons. Wish I could afford more for her as she really loves it.

Tiffany - I think I remember you!? Did you come to Chartridge School for a while? I seem to remember you were a really glamorous American (?) with long red hair? Did you live up in top Pednor? Anyway, have just rediscovered this page - I still do random searches on 'Pednor' from time to time when I'm feeling nostalgic..... and saw your message this evening! Anyway, hi! Didn't know Sparky belonged to you. He was lovely - chestnut, with swirly lighter coloured mane? Very gentle.... oh, those were the days!
