Looking on the left, just below 'Ceiber Hall' was a grocery shop, I think where the white blind is down, caled 'the Meadow Stores'. My brother Desmond James started work there as an errand boy delivering goods to the customers. He went on to become a manager with the same company in Mountain Ash, Oxford Street, then it became 'Lipton Stores'. He worked with the same company, retiring as a company director with Safeway supermarkets.

I am helping trace my brother-in-law's family tree and we have found his 2nd cousins were born in Penrhiwceiber. We are especially interested in George Henry Hall born 1881. We have found him living at 20 Station Terrace, Penrhiwceiber in the 1911 census with his wife Margaret and listed as a Coal Miner Hewer. We gather George was elected to Parliament in 1922. Does anyone have any information or can anyone point us in the right direction when we visit the area? Many thanks, Lynda

Holidays in Penrhiwceiber

I was born 1947 in 64 Church St Penrhiwceiber. My sister and I used to spend the best part of the summer holidays there with grandfather Albert Charles Webb and Aunt Hilda Thomas. Is there any one who knows when Albert Charles moved from Bristol to S Wales? I am researching the family tree and this is one piece of information I am unable to find! The house is still owned by a family member.

My Dad

My dad was born in Harcourt Terrace in Penrhiwceiber in 1910, his name was Wyndham Stephen Jones, he started in the mines then joined the Army. My grandad was also born there, as the rest of my Welsh family whom were coal miners. My grandad was Daniel Stephens Jones, he married Elizabeth Williams. I went there on holiday as a child and remember the railway line across the road and the Moors.

I think also his wife was Josey Thomas but I amnot sure of that. I would be thankful of any help xxx Lisa xx

Penrhiwceiber Swimming Pool

I was born in 21 King Street in the Miskin 23rd May 1952. We moved to Perthcelyn when I was 4 years old. I had a great time at Perthcelyn, a friend of mine used to live in No 48 Brynheulog. I used to live in 49 Brynheulog. During the school holidays we always had nice weather in those days, we got our swimming trunks and a towel and off down to Penrhiwceiber Pool we 'd go . It was there where I learned to swim, and sometimes we would wait for the attendant to go home then jump the wall and have a sneaky hour in the pool and to this day I hear records being played on the radio like Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas 'Do You Want To Know A Secret' and The Beatles were always being played but they were very happy days for me and I always said If I wasn't married I would move back there tomorrow and the moment I'm living in... Missing Ancestors

Hi, my dad was born in Penrhiwceiber because his dad FREDERICK WILLIAM ELLISON was brought up there by the JAMES family, we believe after his father died. Does anybody have these people in their past? I can't find them on the 1911 census, and don't know anything about the JAMES family. Here's hoping.

Did You Know my Mum or Her Family?

Hi. My mum was born in Penrhiwceiber in 1912 and her full name was Treasure Gertrude Young. At some stage in her life she moved to London, married, and I was born in 1951.

Does anybody know of the Young family living in Penrhiwceiber? Either in the early 1900's or present day descendants?

I would be grateful for any information.

Thanks

Tom Morton

Good Old Years

I was born in Mountain Ash, my nan was Mrs Florence Huntley of 74 Penrhiwceiber Road. My parents are Violet Huntley and Les Jones, we used to live in Harcourt Terrace, Penrhiwceiber. I spent all my holidays with my nan as we now live in the Midlands and even to this day I miss the people and the place. My nan cleaned the school, she lived next to curtis greengrocery shop. I remember Willises shop and the paddling pool. We had great fun there. We used to play in the old pithead baths of Cwmcynon colliery and go with our friends to Rosie's Cafe. I'm so glad to see someone keeping our heritage alive and well.

I can remember having lessons in Duffryn House, top floor. The walls and stairways were amazing, thick handrails curving from top to bottom. An amazing building which in my opinion should have been listed.

Playing Fields

My name is Martin Flower. I lived in 21 Bailey St. The field at the back of our house is where I would spend most of the day. There was a crowd of us and we would make Dutch arrows, yes you cannot use them today. If you could see forty arrows in the air it was some sight. And when there was a flood Nieno's cafe lost all his stock. The grown ups would be in the water getting fags, tobacco and any beer barrels that were from the Baileys Arm. The treat in the summer would be loading a pram with bread, butter, cups and jam, bats, football, and then it was a long walk over the cwm where there was a stream. Have a few pictures of me and my gran. When I saw this picture of the swimming baths it reminded me of a boy that lived in Bailey St that drowned there, eddie he was out skinny dipping. His mum was dad ran a shop... Read more

A Memory For The Rest Of Your Life

Swimming Baths c1955

I remember the swimming baths very well. My name is Peter Weeks and I used to live on Llanwoanno Road. I swam at this baths at every opportunity during the summer. I used to dive from the diving board on the right hand side as you look at the picture, coming up at the steps in middle of the pool. On the one occassion there were people at the steps blocking my access to the steps, it was at this time I learnt the value of being able to swim, for I could not, and nearly drowned. The staff of the pool noticed my distress and managed to get me out of the pool, and carried this semi-concious little boy to the office, where I managed to recover, but this was not the end, after I recovered the staff took me back to the pool and despite my protestations would not let me leave till I had learnt and demonstrated few basic swimming strokes. ... A Magical Time

Town Hall And Bridge 1950

My name is Peter Weeks and I lived on Llanwoanno Road. Every Sunday I would cross this bridge with my elder brother Kenneth, on our way to the Baptist Chapel. This was the time of steam trains. We could hear the trains comming a long time befor they reached the bridge. When we heard the train we used to run to where the train ran underneath, lean over the edge of the bridge, and get lost in the white smoke and steam from the train as it trundled along bellow, a time when it seemed like a differant world full of amazing things with these magical machine monsters.
