South Yorkshire memories
My Childhood
I was born in this year, but do not have much to remember from then. About 1974 and I remember playing with a few children in the village. The Lister children really I rember. The Twiggs lived in the Abbey. I spent endless happy days there with the horses. The ghosts, mainly monks from the abbey. I lived in 3 Station Cottages. The Scotts in the bid house on the A318. Mr Webb at the Priory with his lovely horses. Colin and Jessie at Forge Cottage. I thought I'd die when my father said we had to move. I loved and still do love that cottage and village. We had no pub, no shops and few buses, oh, and not many street lamps too! Mum and I would walk back from ballet lessons in the pitch black, but we knew all the shadows and felt the cold winds in the winter. I also remeber Peter Sutcliff in the later years too. Skellow Hall Children's Home
I can remember the day I first went to Skellow, in the year 1950. I was put into the children's home at the top of Skellow Road where three of my brothers were at the time. The superintendent then was Mr Rhodes and his wife Mary. They only lasted four years of my childhood as the new superintendent came, who was there till the day I left, some nine years later. Lads attended the local schools, first the older lads who attended Skellow Secondary Modern School and I at the infant school that was joined on to it. The building was far smaller than what is there now, plenty of room to play and orchards which bears a variety of fruit. The old stables were in good order and the coach houses used as garages. My memories were of good and bad of my treatment at the home, but as far as I'm concerned will be with me for the rest of my days, I hope to finish a book... Read more
The 3 Skulls
I remember walking during the 1950s, from where I used to live in Goldthorpe, up the hill to Hickleton, as far as the church to view the three skulls within the wall of the lych-gate... "Today for me, tomorrow for thee" was the chilling message around the window where they were set. Unfortunately they were stolen some years ago. I am not sure if they have now been replaced; I think there was problem in obtaining replacements in this day and age. On the way up we would call in the first little cottage on the left, where the owner ran a small shop from the front room, and buy sweets. I was sharing these memories with a gentleman recently who said that was his grandmother's shop! It is a small world!
3 Skulls
To reply to Sandra, the 3 skulls have now been replaced behind a safer glass case. I live in Goldthorpe but my husband's family share some links with Hickleton from the family branch of his mother's side. His grandmother had some relations from Hickleton, I think the family name was Ball. My mother-in-law too in her 20s delivered some products to the Hickleton Hall, residence of Lord Halifax then, on a bicycle, as her parents had a general grocery shop on Doncaster Road, Goldthorpe (Walton). She told us that Lord Halifax was fair but strict and even during hot summers you couldn't present yourselves dressed in shorts at the Hall. I remember Sue Ryder's annual village fete as a lively, crammed packed with activity and fun occasion. We had the RAF helping out, we had a famous celebrity coming to open the ceremony, I shook hands with Jean Rogers (Dolly) and Matt Payne (who played her husband) from the 'Emmerdale' cast on two different occasions. Bentley Park
This photograph is of me and my brother and our friends playing on the 'bumper'. I'm the girl stood up on the bumper with my back to the camera, next to the crouching boy...and my brother is the boy also stood up on the bumper most, facing the camera, 3rd from the left. We all spent every waking moment in the park...those were the days! My daughter suprised me at Christmas with a copy of this photo.
Cricket on The Green
I was brought up in Tennyson Avenue off Sprotborough Road and at weekends in the Summer would cycle 20 or so miles all around south Yorkshire. If on the way to Conisbrough, Barnbrough or the River Don we would pass the Ivanhoe Hotel which, to a 14 year old in 1950 looked to be a very grand place indeed. If a cricket match was taking place on the large field at the back of the hotel we would often abandon our planned bike ride and watch the game. I believe that some very famous YCC players appeared in Yorkshire League matches at this ground.
The Hotel was the original venue for the meetings of the Doncaster Motor Club. Founder members of the club included my father Charles Edward (Charlie) Flinders, Dr Burns and the Raynes brothers Cyril and Eddie who ran the motor cycle dealership in Doncaster. Conisborough Castle
I lived in Rawmish, and as a special treat my dad's mate Tony Williams got his mate the caretaker to let me have my own personal look roun't castle. My dad used to work at the pit offices in Denaby. When I used to go and see my dad in't olidays I'd go train spotting to the station and then ride home making sure I went via the castle.
