Flats in Palace Street
Hi, does anyone recall these flats? My grandparents lived there, Mr and Mrs Rowe. My grandad worked on the Barbican, he was a skipper on a fishing boat. They had a large family, my dad was one of their children, name of George Rowe. They have all long gone but I still have lots of family in Plymouth. Shirley Jones (nee Rowe)

RE: RE: Flats in Palace Street
Palace Street flats are near Vauxhall Street. I had an aunt who lived in Rendle Street flats which are close to the Gaumont, her Christian name was Violet and she married my uncle Albert Rowe and had 11 children (cousins of mine) who all still live in Plymouth. So you can see I have many relations in Plymouth and the Rowe family name is still going as of those children 3 are girls, the rest are boys. Nice to hear from you!! Shirley Jones (nee Rowe)

RE: RE: Flats in Palace Street
Hi Shirley,
Were the Palace Flats in Union Street? I had a Great Uncle by the name of William Blee who lived in the flats adjacent to the Gaumont Cinema in Union Street for many years. I also had an uncle who did his apprenticeship with Cloads Ships Chandlers in Southside Street on the Barbican. He married a girl from a family full of girls who grew up in Southside Street also. Don t know her maiden name though. (Her christian name was Violet !).
Some coincidences there !

RE: RE: Flats in Palace Street
Hi again Shirley,
It is very interesting trying to make these connections! I know the Barbican area fairly well as I grew up in Tresillian St Cattedown during the early 60s and this brings me to another question!
My best school friend was Robbie Rowe who lived in Mainstone Avenue. His father worked on the buses I think. Any relation? Robbie went into the Navy as far as I remember.

RE: RE: Flats in Palace Street
Hi Jeff. Thank you for message. Not sure if your friend is related as so many of the Rowe family that I have no contact with now but will make enquires to such. You mentioned Catdown, many years ago I used to know a fellow from there, he was in the RAF and stationed at Watchet in Somerset which is close to where I live, his name is Monty Humphries. I just cannot remember the name of the street in Catdown where he lived at that time as it was so long ago. As you say, very interesting finding news on Plymouth as so many of my relations still there. Hope to hear from you again re Plymouth Regards, Shirley
