Southgate

A Memory of Pontefract.

I have lived in Pontefract for most of my life. I was born in 1958. At the age of 3 to 4 years of age I lived with my parents and two younger sisters in a very large detached house on Southgate. It was directly opposite what is now the Dentists, near Stringers garage. Our house was next to what was I believe was a sweet factory. That building has now been renovated and sells carpets. I started at the infants school at the side of the bus station.
I distinctly remember the lay out of that large house. It had a beautiful stained glass door. On entering the room to the right had a very large fireplace with brass fenders. There was a living room and a kitchen. Upstairs there were four bedrooms, one en suite and a bathroom and toilet.
A word has always stuck in my memory "ingsnook". I don't know whether this was the name of the house.
If anyone could enlighten me about this house I would be most grateful.
It was demolished around 1962/3 to make way for the very last block of flats to be built.

Hi Elaine. I think maybe the house had an inglenook fireplace?

And I think the sweet factory was Bellamy's maybe? Or was that Ewbank's? One was there and the other was in town near the old Catholic church and Fell's carpets. (By the way, talking of carpets, were you Barry's wife?)
