A Week to Remember
It was always a sense of adventure searching for new place to visit on our holidays - and certainly we found an idyllic spot just a mile or so outside the town of Cemaes Bay. Mother had been staying with my younger sister who was in the final weeks of her pregnancy - so to give Mother a rest before baby arrived we took her with us, I contacted the owner of a house overlooking the bay - or rather - her secretary - and we were delighted to find it was available for the week in October 1976. Travelling down from Hertfordshire we stayed overnight in Wales, near Ryton of the XI Towns - before beginning our adventurous trip to Anglesey. When we arrived at the house - we were amazed - we were greeted by the housekeeper, shown around the house, handed the keys, and she departed saying "Enjoy your stay", and that she could be found in her cottage at the end of the garden - if needed. Learning to Cycle.
I learnt to cycle on this promenade in 1948 and then had many happy hours on my bike exploring Holy Island and the west side of Anglesey. The photo is prior to 1948 as the tall funnelled Trinity House Tender "Beacon" shown top right was replaced by the "Argus" in that year. Holyhead, my Home, my Life, Warts And All
I am from Holyhead, left at 17 years of age to join the military police, served 22 years, had a second career in security, protection, worked in media, met several VIPs and worked for Middle Eastern royalty, retired as a security director of a local security company in Farnborough. I have decided to write a book about my childhood, schooling, service in the army and my life to date. The story is mainly about the warmth and friendship and characters in Holyhead. The item was in the Holyhead and Anglesey Mial 5 Dec 2010. I am looking for photos of Nissen Huts where I was brought up and prefabs, can anyone help me?
Life in The Village
Was wonderful to see this postcard, as I was a child of 7 living in the village, when the photo.was taken. When we moved to the village in 1954 there was no electricity, water was from the village pump and people used chemical or earth closets. In 1960, there was mains water and electricity but no proper sanitation. I have wonderful memories of living in the village, playing in the fields and having easy access to the beach. I have visited the village quite a few times in the past 10 years and have met up with old child hood friends.
Looking For Family
I am trying to carry out a family tree with the surname Jones, it is difficult! I know there was an Elizabeth who went to Wrexham for a time. I do not know whether she returned home and would like to know more about her and her family. Anyone out there - I believe I was named after her. I wonder if there are any family members still living there and what happened to Elizabeth.
Gaerwen Farm
I lived for a number of years at Gaerwen Farm, Bull Bay. The views were fantastic and on a clear day you could see the Isle of Man from the front room windows. Most of the people in the area were really lovely to know. James Francis and his sister Jane, the Rowlands sisters, Glenys Spelling who had the riding school, William Owen who had the farm next door to me and not forgetting the Wilsons who ran the Post Office. I used to shop also up at Cemaes Bay. The wonderful Meagan Owen who had Pioneer Stores. You could buy anything there and it was all top quality.
