Maypole Liptons John Street

A Memory of Porthcawl.

I did some of my early training in the maypole-Lipton store in John Street under store manager Dick Roberts & Deputy Manager Ben Hopkins. I recall querying why there were rows of wellington boots on a bench in the basement warehouse as well as stock being stored on low trestles. "Well you'll need them when the flood comes" I was told!

Miners holiday fortnight was something else in Porthcawl, one week I recall selling over 600 cases of peaches and 300 cases of honeydew melons! Mind you there were great perks of the job in that store, like females shopping for snacks in their swimwear !!!

My butchery training was done with Albert Tucker, another great local character.

I owe my career of the past to "true" grocers like these men

My wife says she thinks she remembers you, she also trained in the butchery with Mr Tucker, her name was Madeline and her sister was Sandra , they called my wife Mandy she was blond blue eyes about 20 then. She remembers the wellington boots as well .
Certainly do remember her....and of course Albert Tucker.....
