Cornwall memories

Jeux Sans Frontiers

Does anyone remember Jeux Sans Frontiers being organised by Helston Rotary (I think) and held in and on Coronation Lake.

I attended Helston Grammar School during the 60s and lived with my parents Prisk and Phyllis Dale at The Gables Filling Station Trevenen.

Back to the search April 2009

Have returned to Cornwall to try tracing some of the ancestors through graveyards and the Mormon Centre. Also found a brilliant library in Redruth on the day we were going home and found written info on John Carter and his family members with birth and death dates which was very helpful.
The graveyards were fantastic and I found my grandmother and... [more]

Searching for my ancestors

Prussia Cove is a place I walked to in 2007 and have come away knowing that I have todo my family tree as I am related to both Captain Harry Carter and his brother John Carter (The King of Prussia) who were local smugglers. My brother has been named John Carter Read and it is from my mother's side of the... [more]

Little Cudden Point

beyond is Cudden Point proper, here is the "Oratory" and a plaque with the inscription "WE HAVE A BVILDING OF GOD, AN HOVSE NOT MADE WITH HANDS, ETERNAL IN THE HEAVENS
WHERE THE SPIRIT OF THE, LORD IS THERE IS LIBERTY"
In front is Pisky Cove

Kennegy Cove

Looking from Prussia Cove (Prussia Cove is the area, not an actual cove) towards Kennegy. Tin mine workings exposed on beach and on cliffs above. Kerrier DC (it's just on the border of Kerrier and Penwith DCs) have replaced the rope we abseiled down with stainless steel steps and ladder, but it's no easier to get down!

Porthenalls

Porthenalls on left, Lutyens-like house built early 1900s by family, butler/houseman's house on right, all holiday lets now. See Prussia Cove web site

Bessys Cove

called Bessy's Cove by the Carters, is there a story about Bessy saving one of their children?

Porthenalls

Built 1900s, now holiday lets or (big) weddings. The island is Enys (which is Cornish for island!).

Cornwall A Century Ago Photographic Memories

The pier and harbour works were rebuilt after a storm in 1824, when Porthleven was developed as a trading port. Fishing was also carried on. Boats wait in the harbour entrance for the rising tide to take them into the inner harbour. The clock tower is conspicuous near the pier, and the new lifeboat house faces the sea on the right.... Picturesque Harbours Photographic Memories

As with the port of Newlyn, the small harbour at Porthleven uses the registration letters of Penzance. It was (and remains) a common practice for two boats to share fixed moorings alongside each other as an adequate number for enhanced safety and security. Porthleven

Cornwall Memories

This working port is at the centre of the sweep of Mount's Bay. Its stone-jettied harbour was constructed at great cost, but Porthleven has never achieved the commercial success for which it might have hoped. The coast here is treacherous for ships, and in stormy weather entering the harbour can be fraught with danger.
