Portishead - Our First House
My wife and I bought our first house at Portishead, South Road, it was £2,200, we could only borrow, so the monthly payment was the same as a week's wages, no overtime or my wife's wages taken into consideration. We had three children and some happy times. I worked on the coal boats and then Albright and Wilson phos factory.

RE: RE: Portishead - Our First House
It was a nervous, almost frightening experience to purchase a first house. Mine was on Down Road at a cost of £3,450, about 1970. I too worked on the coal boats for a number of years, Downleaze, Rockleaze, Druid Stoke, St. Vincent, Colston and laterly the Brandon. From then I worked in the Haven Master's Dept with the Port of Bristol for 26 years. A stable and steadfast career - not a great income but regular with a good pension following early retirement/voluntary redundancy with the transfer of the port ownership to the current Bristol Port Company.
My mother was one of eight sisters born to the Gibbens family who lived in South View. Memory fails me to recall many people I would have known in South Road.
It was good to read your input, thanks. I wish you well.
