Roundhouse
I went to what we used to call the school on the hill. I lived in Knott End and sometimes when we were rich we'd go to school on the bus, but if not it was your two feet that got you there, anyway my memory relates to the roundhouse, it was a toffee shop when we were kids, things you could get for a penny and when you had tuppence, well I guess you were rich, anyway when I had bus money for coming home after school and depending on the weather, if it was nice I would give in to temptation and nip into the roundhouse. Trying to make a selection from all the toffees and treats was a challenge indeed, anyway I always came out with the goodies, the only thing now was that I had to walk home, probably took me about an hour and a walk along what used to be the railway tracks that went through Hackensall, and I used to come out at the bottome of Hackensall Road. Of course I was late home for tea and it also cost me at times a scolding or a clip round the ear, but I think it was well worth it. Eric Butler.

RE: RE: Roundhouse
Eric Butler's memories are virtually the same as mine but twenty years later. In the early 1940s my sister and I went to Preesall school from Knott End and would often walk home along the railway track. In those days though the rail was used to carry coal from Garstang but the trains were very infrequent - I believe just once a week. I am afraid we were not as lucky with the toffee shop though as sweets were rationed and we had used up our weekly ration on Saturday. In 1943 I started at Fleetwood Grammar School so I crossed on the ferry each day. I was often soaking wet by the time I arrived at school. Gwen Croot (nee Cooper)

I went to school on the hill many moons ago. I used to love going into the shop for sweets before I caught the bus home to Knott End. Nice to remember the good old days. I did a memory lane trip, glad to see the shop still standing, it will be a good age now. I think I could still do the walk to Knott End blindfold through the woods.

My mother Joan, went to the school on the hill. She also worked in the Round House shop when she left school in 1942. She lived in Smithy Lane, very close to the shop and school. Her father was a cobbler - Harold Blackburn - and she had two brothers, Harry and Harold. We used to stay with Grandad there quite often as children, in our school holidays. We lived in Bolton, and loved rolling eggs down the hill at Easter time and paddling at Knott End. Happy days!
