More about this scene

Here we see the offices and entrance gates of Horrockses, Crewdson & Co on Stanley Street. These gates were built in 1912, the same year that the company was renamed - it was previously John Horrocks'. At the back of this picture are the old works, which date from 1791. John Horrocks was a Preston success, and was always held up as a shining example of man's ingenuity. He arrived in Preston in 1791 from Edgworth, near Bolton. With no real capital, he set to work as a muslin weaver in Turk's Head Court, off Church Street. He put out work for hand-loom weavers, and within a year he had built a factory of his own. Within ten years he had six factories and a house in Golden Square. He had also built Penwortham Lodge, fought a local election, and been elected Member of Parliament. The company he founded became the one we see above.
