Old Cock Pit
I was born in Denbigh Infirmary in January 1944. My father, Emlyn, was in the army at the time, he was the son of Abel Jackson, a local decorator. My mother came from Huddersfield. They married Boxing Day 1942. My GGF was Daniel who came from Glasgow. He worked at Coppy Farm, Henllan Road. Daniel married twice, his second wife was the cook at the Hawk & Buckle and he helped serve beer to those who bet on the cock fights.
The cock pit is now at the Folk Museum in Cardiff.
Growing up in Denbigh
I was born at the Denbighshire Infirmary and grew up in Denbigh - it's a lovely town and the surrounding area is beautiful. Both my parents, and my aunt and uncle, worked at the North Wales Hospital, as did so many people from the town. I return there as often as I can, and find it a relaxing place to be. We have kept my parents' home and it's such a pleasure to be there. Thanks for some great photos from the '50s and '60s - happy memories!
Proud to Have Been Born in Denbigh
I was born and lived in Denbigh from 1942 to 1942. I have so many wonderful memories of Denbigh Living in Lentel Pool we used the shops at the bottom of Henllan street there was a Hairdressers,Green grocers and my favorite the grocers were I used to love the smell of vinegar which you could get your bottle refilled from the very large barrel. Can any one recall Miss Proffit ex school mistress she lived which was then a very grand large house next to the church her one eyed Pekingese dog used to sit on the gate post. My sister Gill worked in the Irish Linen shop another amazing place. I worked in Dulcies the hairdressers from 1958 for 3 years next door down there was a very plush Drapers shop ( almost a mini version of Harrods) .when you paid for your purchases your money was placed in a wooden ball by the assistant and then sent to the office via rails over head.... 1960s
I too was born at Denbigh Hospital (1958) and we lived in Trewen which at the time hadn't been extended to Erw Salsbury.
I used to walk to school with Mum down Ruthin Road to Fron Goch and we'd call at a sweet shop on the way back on a busy corner.
Dad worked at Edward Thomas & Co which was an agricultural machinery depot. My sister went to the Convent. We moved away in 1965 but some aspects of Denbigh are very vivid for me and I recall my last day at school and not wanting to leave for this new adventure to England.
My teacher was called Miss Annie and I think there was a Miss Barclay too.
Our neighbours were the Thompson family (including son John with who I used to play out in the street) and Mrs Williams.
I call back each year and in stalking mode (!) always cruise down Trewen to see the old homestead. We grew peas in the garden and... Read more
Townsend Grocery Stores
I used to come on holiday annually to stay with my Nain and Taid in Ruthin, I have fond memories of the staff and family from the "Townsend "Stores; as the train left Denbigh station on the way to Ruthin all the family would be outside to gives us a wave, it was always a highlight of a long journey. David Davies was my great-uncle (being Nain's elder brother), his wife was Ada, and he had a son Dai and daughter May (who worked in the post-office side). I used to enjoy visiting them during our stay and the remember the fascination of the goods they sold.
Llanynys/Llanrhaiadr?
I only found out today that my Grt:Grt:Grandfather,Owen Lloyd, lived in one or indeed both of these places. The house was called Ty-mawr. (The Big House). Does anyone have any information about these places? My Grt: Grt: Grandfather I believe was born in 1793 in Llanrhaiadr. Are any more of his descendants out there please?
My Childhood in Merllyn Cyffylliog
My parents lived in Merllyn from 1947 till 1996 when they had to leave. An idyllic childgood with many characters about....Dic Dun who wnadered about and slept in hedges, a fascination to a child. Will Tom from Glan yr afon who was a mine of information to all. Tic, a southerner, a mystery man who lodged at Nanw Jones. Cyril Jones, my friend Hafwen Dad. Bryn Williams who was the minister and had a lovely voice. I live out of the village and lived next to Fachlwyd Hall which was empty most of my young childhood, which to a imaginative child was full of mystery and lovely plants in the gardens.....tennis courts and stables with the remains of tobbacco plants drying in the out-houses, also kennels. Later our good freinds "The Smiths" lived there.
