When We Were Young.

A Memory of Purbrook.

My Family came to Purbrook in 1965/1966,as they needed a big house for all their growing children, and I joined them in 67.
My memories of this wonderful &Quaint village you can laugh but it holds many memories for me it had about 2 churches ,to many pubs ,the chemist where mum brought us tab(it was a fizzy cola drink),the wool shop that my mother was always popping into , Post Office where mum got stamps and envelopes ,2 Newsagents at the biggest one I was a papergirl, Barbers , Cobblers(he got to mend all our shoes and he smoked a pipe).
oh there was a Bakery ,hairdressers ,Builders yard,Estate agents and the Building Society,Fish and chips ,Pet shop , car place ,the coop with its green shield stamps.
Purbrook had its C of E Church and School ,its other infant and Junior school , the Grammar School that later became just an ordinary comp..
School Days were my nightmares.(and I haven't been back ever)
My fondest memories are of fielders park ,as the kids from our street would go with a jam butty and squash and go and play there all day ,i loved the slide as it was very high and scary but fun too ,all that green to run around on and roll down the bank ,holidays where fun at fielders.
I didn't like the chicken farm or the dark scary wood full of stinging nettles ,that is where we buried our gerbils in the wood and the bird I found in the gutter and ask mum if we could give it a proper send off.
Sadly both my parents have gone now and one of my brothers too , My Grandma live with us in Purbrook, she watched the Cricket on the green whilst I played on the swings.
This Village was my home for 18yrs,and like all young people you cant wait to leave too pastures new , I have lived in many new pastures but the memories remain.

Although my family lived in Fareham, I went to Purbrook Park Grammar School because my mum wanted me to go to a co-educational establishment. Price's in Fareham was for boys only . As you say, it later became a comprehensive (when I was in the 4th form). The upper years always had a slight disconnect for the remainder of my time there. Left after A Levels in '78.

I can honestly say that I enjoyed my final years at Purbrook even more than my time at university. (Too much time in The Woodman). Happy memories!
My dad went into the Woodman Pub ,it was the Hampshire Rose pub for my sister and her friends and sometimes I tagged along too.
All my friends tried out all the different pubs in our villiage even when they were not 18yrs,and got away with it.ha ha ha .
its good to have memories that make us smile.
