I am Howard F. Van Horn II. I live in Sandy, Utah, USA which is in the Great Salt Lake Valley.

My great, great grandmother was Jane Price, wife of William Price. Jane was born in Monmouthshire, Wales on 2/15/1801 and died in Frostburg, Maryland, USA on 2/17/1888. William Price died in Wales (prior to 1888). My great grandmother, Sarah Price was their child and was born in 1841 in Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, Wales. She married my great grandfather James E. Dando (born on April 4, 1837 in Vartage, Monmouthshire, Wales) on July 4, 1857 in Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA. James Dando was brought to Western Maryland to work for the Georges Creek Coal Company.

I am looking for someone from the Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, Wales. area who may have a family history that includes my great grandmother Sarah Price or her parents.

Belli's Cafe

The hot summer of 1976 - I was 16 and studying for my O levels in between minding the shop for my adopted parents Bert and Mary Belli. Our cafe was one of two Belli cafes in the town, but of course I always thought ours was superior and served the best steamed pasties and pies.

That summer was also eventful because of the huge mountain fire on the Blorenge. The peat caught fire and it took the local fire brigade many weeks to bring it under control. I remember having to keep the doors and windows shut to keep out the pall of smoke hanging over the town.

The photo was taken looking down Broad Street towards Fowlers shop. The year was five years before I was born. My name is Stephen Belli and I was adopted by the Belli family in 1963. I lived in the town until 1990. I now live in Honiton, Devon.

Amelia died 25 September 1890. in Blaneavon. My wife and I have been to your lovely district and will be coming again shortly.  Does anyone recognise any of this - it would be really great to get in touch with my Welsh roots.

Bellis Cafe

I was born in 5 Lower New Rank, Blaenavon in 1950 and went to the Garn School and left Blaenavon in 1962 for Kent.
My dad was born there, Tommy David, does anyone remember us? I used to go to Bellis Cafe at the bottom of town, we though it was real cool.

First X-Rays Come to Blaenavon!

My Grandfather, Mr. Llewellyn Price [British Empire Medal], was awarded a silver cigarette case on 24 July, 1937 by the Medical Society of Blaenavon. A golden key to the X-ray room was also presented. This ceremony was in recognition of Llewellyn being instrumental in bringing the first X-ray apparatus to Blaenavon.

A former Councillor, Llewellyn was also Area Secretary of the Electrical Trades Union and was prominent in many other branches of the Union. In his younger days he was a member of the St John Ambulance Brigade. He was awarded the BEM for meritorious service in 1944 while working at Lucas, Cwmbran.

Married to Florence May Roberts, they had two sons, who survived them both. My Grampa died at Llandough Hospital at the age of 66 years on 24 May 1963.  The funeral took place at Varteg Road Cemetery, following services at his home, 5 Chapel Row, where I was born in July 1962.
