Wayfield Cottages

Post Office Corner c1955
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

As a child I lived in the cottages opposite the Post Office, we moved when I was around 9 years old and the houses were later pulled down. My memories of living there were very happy and I remember every year standing out front watching the Old Crocs go by. I now live in Hove and work in Crawley so drive past twice a day, and often try to work out exactly where the houses were. Now both my parents have passed on its lovely to see a picture showing the houses, even if it's not close up. We always went to the Post Office to buy our sweets and I remember once a week getting a heart ice cream, a real treat.

RE: RE: Wayfield Cottages

I just read Jennifer's recolections and was wondering when she lived there, as I do not recognise the name, she may have married? My family the Walkers moved into Wayfield farm house in November 1957 and were there for ten years before moving to Crawley. Jennifer may have gone to the primary school at Pyecombe which I did before attending Hassocks Secondary Modern until I left at fifteen.

RE: RE: Wayfield Cottages

Nice to get your comment George, my maiden name was Wickens. We moved into Wayfields when I was about 2 so 1960 and went to school with your sister Jenny and brother Andrew. I have tried to look for Jenny on FR and FB but couldn't find her. I knew you all moved to Crawley because my mum told me. I have pics of Jenny and I in the garden at Wayfields and at my nan's house etc, as we spent a lot of time together. My dad was Harry and he worked on the farm and my mum was Irene. You may remember my older sister Caroline, she too went to Hassocks before we moved.

RE: RE: Wayfield Cottages

Hello there George,
Earlier this year my partner and I bought Chantry Farm, up on Wolstonbury Hill. Some time ago - I'm trying to find out how long ago, a part of it - the lower field, belonged to Wayfield Farm. Do you have any old maps, or any old memories of going up the track on the west side of Wolstonbury to a field there?!
Many thanks
Beki
