Rayners In Rainham

A Memory of Rainham.

I moved into Rainham in the very early '60s in fact into Princes Park, then about 4 years later into Ingrebourne Rd then during the early '70s into Rothbury Avenue and later after I got married, into Avelon Rd during the mid '80s before leaving the area altogether.

I remember the little shop called Jacksons on Southend Rd and Kildares down Wennington Rd and the cottages along Bridge Rd. My mum worked for a while at Baby Relax on Wennington rd and my Brothers Chris, Robert & my grandfather worked at Keebles while one of my other brothers worked at Murex. My dad worked at a number of places from Fords to International via DCC, Dagnites and others down Chequers Lane. I myself worked in Ilford & later Barking.

My brother Chris started school in Blacksmiths lane before moving onto the one in Upminster Rd S and then later to Lambs Lane. My other bothers and sister went to Brightside & Chaffords. I went to a school on Dagenham Heathway until the mid 60s before going to Upshire & then later College in Hampshire.

I well remember Park Lane Motors, in Upminster rd, by the "small" park and the Smith family that ran that garage and the Social & Working Mens clubs on the opposite side of the road. The Jumble sales at Wennington Village Hall where all ways a big draw as was the Carnival Parade that left Brettons and ended at Spring Farm Park.

Sonny Graham was the head parkie for awhile, and a family friend, who used to let me & my brothers use the putting green at Spring Park Farm for nothing.

Hi, just read your post. Very interesting. Was one of your brothers called Ray.? If so I was at school with him. Re Park Lane Motors, yes remember them well. I was friends with Jeff Smith who used to own and drive big American cars. Did you know where the name Park Lane Motors came From? It was where they used to live in Aveley. My dad, who also worked at Murex used to do a bit of private hire with a firm called
"Pathfinder cars" at the clock tower Rainham. They were very good customers to both him and myself when after his death in 1975 I went to work for AL cars by the social club. Like your mum mine also worked at Baby Relax in the mid to late 60'. I also remember Kildares store where I used to go with my granddad after going to his allotment down the side road. (Do you know that Kildares was converted into a bungalow? Still don't look right) Another weird thing. You say you used to live in Princes Park, well my cousin lived there with the surname Wiggins. Do you remember "Chandler's Bakery" at Chandlers Corner where they used so sell the best bread in rhe world. The smell was to die for. We also used to to the brook along Wennington Road where you could go tiddler fishing in safety. Another great playground was at the end of Ferry Lane where you could go for miles on your push bike, later on my old motorbike, along the sea wall of the Thames. Small world with good memories. Please reply if this rings a bell to you or anyone else.
