Dyfed memories
Friends From St.David''s Now Living in Spain.
We have friends living in Spain, up in the mountains of Murcia. Ian's wife, Elle, I believe originated from St Davids and surrounding area, while Ian was originally from London and then Hereford (a really charming couple). Hope they don't get embarressed. We have visited St David's a few times now, and its lovely cathedral and quaint shops. It also used to have horse and trap rides around the streets. A really beautiful city, unspoilt by time. It's a little bit like Wales's own Land's End. We must revisit again soon.
Holidays
We came to Pembrokeshire on family holdiays all through the 1960s and early 1970s. This beach was our favourite although we called it, mistakenly, 'Barry Island Beach' as to reach it you had to go through Barry Island Farm and a toll of 10/-. We used to go on holiday with another family and so we would all try to pile into one car to save money.
Whilst playing cricket on the beach in 1969 I was approached by a man who asked me to turn out for Llanrhian Cricket Club in a mid-week fixture that night as they were short.
Newgale Since The 1940s
My family built a chalet in Newgale in 1943. This was in the middle of the Second World War. We had many holidays there over the years and were joined by friends on many occasions. After 33 years the chalet needed replacing and this was done in 1976. During the war, holiday workers came to the area to work on local farms and were housed in various properties in Newgale. On the Sands Cafe car park a dining building was constructed. Every week the Ministry of Information sent a film unit around to show feature films for the holiday workers, and local people were also able to see the films. There was no electricity in Newgale at the time but the film unit came with their own generator.

Roch Gate
I am a bit hazy about when we visited Roch but definitely in the 1940s. My father's cousin was Matsy Perkins and she lived at a farm called Roch Gate. I remember sleeping on the most gorgeous feather mattress, so cosy, and we would go down to Newgale Beach, not far away but the wind was so cold! It was a happy time and it would be lovely if someone remembers my father's family.
Post Office
The old post office in the picture once belonged to my family, as did the the farm that once stood to the left of the old post office. I spent the first 18 years of my life growing up in Marloes. It's a lovely place to visit as it's steeped in history, from Henry Tudor to WW2, also the heritage of the Kensington family and the Kensington estate of St Brides. Marloes is outlined with some of Wales's most beautiful coastlines, with world famous islands such as Skomer with its seals, choughs and puffins. And not forgeting Marloes sands where in the summer of 2011 a Hhollywood movie was filmed. (Its not the first time). Yours, L
Where I Grew up
Well, I grew up in Havens Head, it's a lovely quiet place, there is loads of wildlife like foxes and squirrels, badgers loads of wild birds, and there is a lovely footpath where you can look over the lake and that leads to the docks and the marina.
The Abandoned Car.
This photograph shows my father's car reg EDE 3 at the traffic lights in Castle Square. He was William Gywther Thomas, Divisional Highways Surveyor. The reason the car looks as if it has been abandoned was that the traffic lights had failed and father was investigating the reason at the control box on the corner of the street to the left of the photograph out of shot. The police are there to direct the traffic which was not very taxing as you can see from the volume of traffic passing through the square.
