Norfolk memories
I knew Sergeant Sissen well as he used to meet the Hickling policeman in Catfield where I was born. Local police met regularly in what was called, I think, a "point". I was born in 1925 so I remember the two policemen standing by their tall cycles outside the junction of Catfield Street and Limes Road.

As a child in the early 1960's my family used to holiday on and around the Broads. My most vivid memory is of a place I considered the most magical in the world....Fairyland in Ludham !! I know it is long gone now but I would LOVE any pictures or memories others have of this place. Sadly, although I know... [more]

Neatishead - the enchanted village!
I spent holidays in this magical place as a boy, staying year after year with my beloved aunt and uncle and my two cousins. It was a vibrant and exciting English village that buzzed and thronged with life and activity. I watched each dawn from my bedroom window as the village street and the busy post office slowly came to life.... [more]

I left school at 15 in 1953, and like many others of my age went to work at A R Taylors timber merchants. I first worked at the Tunstead road site. It was hard work and unlike today there was no such thing as a contract of employment so you did whatever anyone who was older than you told you to... [more]

I am looking for a church called Heringby or St Ethelbert Church where my ancestor Hugh Atte Fenne was buried in the chancel next to his mother. He bequeathed money to rebuild the tower, roof and porch around 1474 when he died. He also founded a college and an almshouse for the poor. Could this be the same... [more]

Peggy from the USA, who sent a memory of Brundall, is my cousin. Arthur Henry Brigham was my grandfather, and he was the Signalman at Brundall railway station. I knew Sydney (her father) very well, and also spent many happy days at Brooms boatyard. Get in touch Peggy - it's your long lost cousin calling!!!

Norfolk Broads Photographic Memories
It is a busy day for the small Ranworth Broad, with sailing boats and dinghies out as well as a large motor cruiser. In the centre of the picture is a sailing wherry, the shallow, wide bottomed boat with its characteristic square sail, an adaptation of the traditional trading wherry.

One of the most beautiful of the many lovely Broads churches is St Helens at Ranworth, a short walk from the staithe. The road has widened little since 1934, and there is now a small area where two or three cars can park. The owners of the old-fashioned bicycles propped against the fence are working on the verge opposite.

Norfolk Broads Photographic Memories
The mid 15th-century rood screen is considered by many to be the finest in the country, having escaped damage by Cromwell's troops. A major restoration in 1960 revealed beautifully-coloured portraits of apostles and saints. The font and lectern are both noteworthy, and a mediaeval antiphoner in superb condition is on display. If you feel energetic, a climb to the roof... [more]
