Rhoose Camp
Does anyone remember the camp where women and children stayed when they lost their home or were abused by husbands? Mr Hughes was the man in charge, he wasn't very nice. It was a great place for little ones who didn't know what was going on. I went to the girls' school in Barry. We were taunted on the bus as if we were trash, it wasn't the kids' fault they were there, or my mother's as it happens. We moved to a caravan in Llanmaes for a few years then moved back to the Rhondda. They have better places for these poor unfortunates now.

RE: RE: Rhoose Camp
This was Lletty Rhws. When I was a youngster we didn't really understand quite why someone arrived there. It was a forbidding looking place. I remember making friends with one young lad (though somehow knowing that his presence was only temporary), and had the mystifying disapproval of my parents. Important to remember that in those days we were taunted on the school bus because we came from Rhoose and not Barry. Likewise a Rhoose kid in Llantwit Major could very easily end up in a fight at the wrong time of an evening. Those who bemoan the collapse of village life should remember that petty tribalism went with it and is thankfully gone now.
