Singing in Rhos
The great thing about Rhos as far as I am concerned was the fantastic wealth of singers in that village (it was the largest village in Wales). I lived at that time in Rhostyllen, a couple of miles away from Rhos, and I loved going to the Miners Welfare Club, especially on Sundays. Wales on Sundays was dry in those days so all the men in the area went to that club for a drink at dinner time (clubs were exempt from the general no drinking laws)- that is lunch time to all the rest of the UK. After a few pints of beer and a game of bingo the whole place would erupt with marvellous male voices singing as though they were one huge choir. I would usually be in the company of my dad (I was the non drinking driver in those days), and he having an exceptionally good voice would be asked to get up on the stage and give a solo rendition of one or two... That Smell
When i was young i moved to manchester from Rhos but cam back lots to viset my Nain and Tiad in Johnstown and i alwys remember the smell of the smoke coming from the chimnys. i loved to smell the air while in the car going down High st. i have moved back now but it dose not smell the same any more.

Yr Hen Felin
The Old Mill
I remember playing alongside the old mill. There was a family in the nearby farm - Edna and Audrey were the names of two of the sisters. The old pub went on fire during that period. There was an area for the children to play on the side the river.
Cofio chwarae yn ymyl yr hen felin. Roedd teulu yn y fferm gyfagos - Edna ac Audrey oedd enwau dwy o'r chwiorydd. Aeth yr hen dafarn to gwellt ar dan tua'r adeg yma. Roedd lle i blant chwarae yn ymyl yr afon.
Bryn Eitha
I was born in Bryn Eitha Penycae in February 1941 I to spent many happy hours playing in the area of Pentre near the old mill.
I allso knew of Crad The Garth as mentioned in another correspondance.
All the local villages had characters such as Crad, our character was Bob Hoy, he was a harmless man who always preached the gospel to all of us young children, he used to get us together an sing 'I'M A H A P P Y' these were difficult times for our parents but very HAPPY times for us children.
Most of our spare summer time was spent either down at the recreation ground ( the rec.) near the Mill Farm, on Ruabon mountain picking whimberries, down in Jacks Wood ( yr ddol) or pestering the local farmers.

Happy Days in Pentre.
The top bungalow in your photo (one), brings some happy memories. This was the first school in Pen-y-Cae. I spent many, many hours there with Hughie and his brother. The two classrooms (bedrooms to-day) go up in steps. There used to be many old photos on the walls of children taken in the two classrooms.
Francis Family 1880 - 1960
My great-grandparents owned a grocer shop in Penycae in the 1890 - 1920 era and the name was Thomas Francis, and had eight children, four boys and four girls. One of their daughters married a music teacher called John C Powell of Rhosllanerchrugog. A great-uncle of mine was Fred Williams who was headmaster of a Penycae School in the 1920s. Does anyone remember a family member, grandparents? I should be very grateful to learn some more of my family history.
Does Anyone Know my Great-Grandparents
Does anyone know anything about my great-grand parents, they owned shops in Rhos, they were greengrocers, they had a horse and cart. They were George Ellis Hughes (Clifton)and Abigail Hughes (Clifton), they lived at Spring Bank, Hill Street. I lived wth my grandparents in School Street, they were Charlie Ellis Hughes (Clifton) and Lucy Mary Hughes (Clifton). I lived with my mum and dad and my grandparents at School Street. I would love any photos of the old Rhos or any of my grandparents or my great-grand parents, if anyone can help please ring me on 01978 844694.
