Ripon Girls High School

The Minster And The Bridge c1885, Ripon
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

I remember going to Ripon Girls High School with all the other girls in uniform, my dad had the Ripon Confectionary Company, a sweet shop in Ripon, my friends loved it when I brought sweets to school. The store was right next to Woolworths. I remember the bridge well although it has been many many years since I have been there. Wonder if anyone remembers Marion Clayton?

RE: Ripon Girls High School

Loved the school. Remember Miss Cullingworth, Miss Philips, Miss Allison, Mrs Greenwood, Miss Denton, Miss Wilkinson(wilko) who swayed backwards and forwards whilst talking to us. Miss Peckitt, Miss Holland, Miss Craig, Miss Nimmo and Miss Fletcher(Fletch). I still go back to look at the lawn where we used to congregate, under the crab apple tree. I went back some seven years ago and requested to look around inside. Apart from the exterior, the only original bits left were the staircase and the windows in the main hall, depicting the ripon hornblower. It had been partitiioned everywhere, for modern learning purposes and was almost unrecognisable. I felt so sad. Prefects could be horrid I remember. If we were seen in town without berets we were in trouble, uniform had to be intact. Oh, that it were like that now. Scruffiness of Ripon Grammar School pupils is commonplace. It was a sad day when the two schools were amalgamated. Hockey practice on Saturdays and we practiced tennis after school. Class of 1960 Abbott, Hardcastle, Edwards, Walker, Boynton, Nicholson, Thompson, Coates, Millican, Parker, Duffey, Blackburn, Julian, Bingham, Kershaw, King and probably others. Remember the hut where we got changed for games and had latin and history with Miss Allison. I did not go on to great academia, but it was time well spent.
