Romford And Havering-Atte-Bower,Very Fond Memories

We moved to Romford in 1951 from Havering where we lived with Nan and Grandad in Pinewood Road. It was an exciting time for me but also an unhappy time leaving Nan and Grandad's house. We moved in a council house in Chelmsford Ave, I made friends with a boy called Raymond Crane, we started school together ,his mother and father ran a market stall in Romford and he had a young brother. I remember mum and I would go to the market twice a week, I loved the place, it was like Aladdin's cave, the eel stall used to fascinate me, in those times you could buy puppies and kittens. We use to visit Nan and Grandad three times a week in Havering,t hat was great, we used to walk, it was all country roads then. In 1955 we moved, but the year before that Raymond moved away, I remember being heartbroken, he gave me a photo of himself and his little brother which I still have to this day. Over the years I have often wondered what happened to him. Those memories will stay with me for always, they were good times.

RE: RE: Romford And Havering-Atte-Bower,Very Fond Memories

My aunt and uncle lived in Pinewood Road in the 1950s. Their names were Fred and Florrie Cox. They had a daughter called Maureen and a son called Robert. They emigrated to Australia in 1957. I used to stay with them. I used to think it was miles away in the country because I lived in Forest Gate, London. I have lived in Romford since 1982 and love it for its history. I am writing a story about Romford's heritage. I was glad that I read these memories on this site. I wonder if anybody knew my aunt and uncle.

RE: RE: Romford And Havering-Atte-Bower,Very Fond Memories

I lived in Havering Road from 1947 (year I was born) to 1964. I had a sister that died when she was four and she is buried at Havering- Atte -Bower. Mum and I used to walk up to Havering church on Sunday to pay our respects and we used to walk past Chase Cross school and on past the Orange Tree Pub which was quite a steep hill. There were wooden stocks outside the church, on the corner of the green. If my memory is correct, there was a blacksmith's near the church. If you continued to walk there was an old curiosity shop which had stuffed animals in glass cases. I am going back 55years so I could be mistaken. As children we used to go to Bedfords Park to feed the deer and pick bluebelles. Also I would hang out in Rise park and Lawns Park.
