My Ancestors Were Hotelkeepers Here
My Great Grand Aunt Sarah Holgate, née Barnes, came here with her husband Benjamin in the 1870s to run the hotel (from Manchester). Benjamin died in 1877 and Sarah stayed in charge until sometime in the 1890s because in the 1901 census she is retired in Newquay. I am descended from Sarah's brother, George Barnes, who went to London and became a brewery manager somewhere south of the Thames (it is assumed because of census locations.) George married a girl from a very old Kent family called Caroline Wood and one of their daughters, Edith Mary Barnes (1871-1954) married my grandfather, Dr Robert Douglas Muir. So the world turns.

My gt grandmother, Eliza Catherine Bevans, and her family were guests in the hotel in 1891. Their father was the divisional carpenter at the coast guard there.
They show in the same census page as the lady mentioned in the post above/
The Ferry From Penzance to The Scilly Isles
I spent my summer holidays in Cornwall in 1958. Two whole weeks on a farm just to the north of Marazion was not my idea of excitement, so I was not looking forward to it. However, things improved when we got there for two reasons. Firstly, there was another family also booked in for their holidays, and they had a rather charming daughter of my age - where are you now Elizabeth Armstrong, and do you remember trying to push wet seaweed down my swimming trunks?! Secondly, my mum and dad took me on a days outing on the ferry from Penzance to the Scilly Isles. For this young and inexperienced traveller, it was quite awe inspiring to find we were totally out of sight of any land for part of the trip. While we were there, I had an accident as some lads were throwing stones in the sea, and I got hit on the back of the head by a heavy pebble. I was taken to a nearby chemist shop... Read more
