VISITS TO RUSPER

My grand parents lived in Rusper for many years and their house was next to the butchers' shop on the same side of the road as the church. I can remember visiting my grandparents, as a school boy and my grandfather was a local builder and decorator and he had worked on both public houses, the Star and the Plough Inn. My father was one of thirteen children that they had raised and he was also involved in the buisness. We used to live in Horsham and often took the only bus to Rusper, they were Mitchells Coaches from the Carfax. I can remember that when we visited Gran and Granpa we had to sit very quietly and certainly make no noise when Granpa was listening to the results for Littlewoods Pools. When Granpa was working on the Star Inn he found on a wall a entire family tree dating back to the 1500s. I can also remember the bucket toilets and Gran doing the washing in a boiler. We often walked in the woods, picking bluebells and blackberries. Quiet times. The butcher often had wood pigeons for sale, and they were great in a pie. I left England for Australia in 1966 but my childhood memories are very vivid.

RE: RE: VISITS TO RUSPER

Hi, I found you on Rusper memories. I now live in Devon after moving there in 2002 on retiring. I often wondered what happened to the people I went to school with as they all seem to disappear, like you.

RE: RE: VISITS TO RUSPER

DEAR GORDON I also lived in Paignton Devon for a period at South Lodge Guest House in Paignton. My parents owned the hotel. What part of Devon are you living in? Re Rusper, I do not know anyone there now, I did know the publican at the Plough pub in the village, it was Tom Miles and his son was Norman. In those days the ceiling was very low and they drew the beer from barrels. The other hotel was the Star and my father was upgrading that as a builder and they discovered a list of previous owners listed on teh wall, dating back to 17th Century. Peter Foster

RE: RE: VISITS TO RUSPER

Hello Peter Foster - I so enjoyed your Rusper memories. My Mom was born/raised in Rusper. Her Dad owned Farley's Butcher Shop located on High Street. Do you suppose my Grandad fed you pigeon pie? Is it possible you knew my Mom? I've no info of my British legacy as all family members are deceased.

RE: RE: Visits to Rusper

Hi Pete, I went to Horsham last month to see my daughter and drove by the Station Hotel round to Gladstone Street. It did not seem to have changed at all, just a few more cars in the street. I don't know how you will cope with the town as it has had so many changes, you will have a problem sorting it out. Rusper will be a lot easier but I don't know about the vica as the English nation has changed a lot since you left 50 years ago. I am having a memory about going to Barns Green on bicycles to buy some home-made strawberry jam somewhere near the Bax Castle, try to remember that. Next week 28 June I am off to France for a month's holiday, we have a caravan over there, it's a bit old now but with a bit of luck it will last a while yet. Will be back for August when I hope to have the family down from Horsham. I also have a brother about 25 miles west of here in Devon. That's about all for now as I have to mow the lawn. See you later, Gordon and Moira.

RE: RE: VISITS TO RUSPER

Dear Friends of Rusper and Horsham.
It is great to look at old pictures of Horsham and Rusper.
I am hoping to go back to Sussex next year, probably April and it will be so wonderful to
catch up on my memories of the area from my childhood.

I also hope to take a lot of photographs of the area.

Best Wishes
Peter Foster

Peter Foster. Tom Miles and his son are quite possibly relatives of mine. I live in Charlwood, just down the road from Rusper and regualy race at Rusper Banger Racing Track. I would be interested to know if the banger track was there when you were there?. Ashley Miles.
