Zachary Merton Maternity Hospital, Rustington.

We moved to Rustington in 1949 as my Mother Dr Mary Higgs was the M.O.H. at Zachary Merton and was the doctor there until her retirement. Zachary Merton was a lovely hospital to have a baby, all the staff were so friendly. The Matron I remember was Miss White, with Sisters Mingay, Cole and Mrs Smith and later Matron Cynthia Grose and Sister Gray to name but a few.
On Christmas Day in the afternoon there was always a tea party to which lots of people came and Father Christmas with presents for everyone. We listened to the King's Christmas message (with great impatience in the case of us children as we were keen to get our presents!) and later we were able just to peep through the doors to see the babies in their cots and the special Christmas Baby.

RE: RE: Zachary Merton Maternity Hospital, Rustington.

My brother Dennis Arden was in the RAF and on board a submarine out of Gosport Hants on and exercise in the English Channel, when a torpedoe fired, turned back on them, an emmergencey dive took place and many of the crew including my brother were mentally affected, so much so that he ended up in a Naval Military Hospital in Banstead, this I now find was probably the Zachery Merton Hospital, if this is so, then I am trying to find out more details of the place, its treatment of personell and the backward history of the event which brought my brother to this hospital, which I know my late parents had to visit in 1947 to see my brother. He was never really right after this event and eventually died as the result of a road accident in 1959. If anyone can help me with trying to trace backwards to this event I would be most grateful. Thankyou. Maurice Arden.
