Does Anyone Remember Greengate & Irwell, Irwell Works And Mark Addy's Bridge
Does anyone remember Greengate & Irwell, Irwell Works, off Ordsall Lane? From 1957 to 1962 I worked there as one of the three telephone operaters. I have very happy memories of my time there and the many friends I made. My question is about the bridge which crossed the River Irwell from almost outside the factory. I always believed that it was the famous Mark Addy Bridge and legend had it that Mark Addy himself haunted it, but if you go to the website it says that the Mark Addy bridge crosses the Irwell just off Deansgate. The media, film, television and newpwpapers portray early Salford as some huge slum area, they don't know about families and neighbours who always pulled together and helped each other no matter what the problem, AND EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT WAS CHIPPY NIGHT, you will not find a modern chippy which can make chips as good as a Salford chippy (wrapped in newspaper - health and safety blablabal), speaking of which, does anyone remember taking old newspapers to the local chippy and getting free fish batter scraps? We had no money, but we didn't have gun crime, bad mannered children or everybody using the "F" word as part of everyday language. I know that at the age of 70 I'm a grumpy old woman, but at my age I can say whatever I want and people just say "Aw Bless". I lived in Cheetham Hill, Hightown, then Higher Broughton 1939 to 1974 NAMES. Jean Wright - Jean Costello - Jean Rowland. If we have any shared memories email me at jean_rowland@hotmail.com LOL

Does anyone remember Regent Road, Ellesmere Street, Woolies and British Home Stores, also Landes where you bought on tic, or as we used to say, on the drip. We were as poor as field mice but we had so much fun and great friends, especially at Salford Lads Club.

I lived in Orsall at Burnett Street, off Oxford Street, until 1960 when my parents bought a shop on Trafford Road. My name then was Ann Lynch. I remember Land's, I loved watching the cash pulley, also George Glass and the swimming baths on Regent Road. I have just read the comment by Alan Walsh who I used to know. I loved those days when you could go to friends' homes if your parents were not in and "Auntie" would watch you. Does anyone know Billy Craven & Eddie Blackwell?

I remember Greengate & Irwell Rubber Co as my father George Savage worked there for many years. He worked in V Ropes if I remember right. He was there before he joined the Army and went back again after his army days were finished. He eventually left to work at Manchester Dry Dock about 1978. I also think my mother Ivy Savage workrd there for a while too but that was about 1940. Mark Addy's Bridge to me was a fascinating place even though there was only the river to look at. I remember being told that Mark Addy had rescued a number of people who had fallen into the river. He was obviously a hero. Let me know if anyone remembers my Mam & Dad. We lived in Cape Street off Regent Road behind the Queens Pub.

I remember the bridge, I used to walk over it most days to get to work with Dave Walker from the bus stop on Chester Road. I worked there from 1960-1964. I also remember Jimmy Bradbury and George Smith, Ann Eardley and Gwynneth Walker and her sister Lois. I worked in the Order Dept and there were girls called Hilda and Freda as well as Doris Groom. Long time ago. My name was Pauline Evans then. We used to go in the pub over the road at lunchtime to listen to the juke-box.

My father George Savage worked at Greengate and Irwell Rubber Co for many years and left there to work at Manchester Dry Dock in 1978. If I remember right he worked in V Ropes. I remember him watching from Ordsall Lane the Mount Carmel Procession as as we walked around the parish. Mark Addy's Bridge always had a fascination for me even though there was nothing there except the river to look at. There is a large monument erected in Weaste Cemetery for Mark Addy stating how many people he rescued from the river.

My Uncles, Arthur, Derrick and Ronald See all worked at Greengate and Irwell. Arthur's wife, Aunt Dora, called Dolly by everyone, worked in the canteen and took the tea trolley round. Dolly's daughter Avril and myself used to walk over the bridge many many times. We went to the ice rink in Altrincham and got the 'bus to Altrincham from the other side of the bridge.
