Salford Childhood

I was born in and grew up in Salford. My dad had a pub "The Farriers Arms" off Bury Street, and before that my dad was caretaker of Ladywell flats. We lived in Flint House, the blocks were alphabetically named, Albion, Barry, Corby, Danby, Easton, Flint and Goole. Afacing the flats was a quarry where we used to play and a shop called Stories.
When we moved to the pub in the early 50s things were so different than today - we used to play out with no fear of harm, we used to roam the terraced streets and only came home when mam shouted us in, or it was tea time. We would go to Peel Park, Dean Road Park where they had a parkie who ruled the park, the Rex cinema where we would go to the Saturday matinee, on Sundays all the kids went to Sunday school. I went to Gravel Lane off Blackfriars Road, and attended Sacred Trinity School, Canon Hussey was the then rector of our church and his sister Miss Hussey taught at the Sunday school. I remember seemingly long summers popping the pitch bubbles on the cobbles with wooden lolly sticks. I can still remember the smell and the slaps I got for getting tar all over my clothes. I remember Greengate and all the shops - May's pawnshop, Elsie's drapers, Serafino's ice cream shop where it was made. I used to go to school with Tony Serafino, and I have never tasted ice cream like it since. Greengate and Irwelll Rubber Co, Balderstones where my mam would send me for bones for soup and lips and lugs!!! A tobacconist where I would go for cigs for my dad's pub. And what lovely names!!!! Springfield Road, Garden Lane, Paradise Row, Greengate and not a blade of grass in sight!! But such happy childhood memories. I have written an account of my growing up in Salford and am trying to find a way of getting it in print. If anyone knew my family please get in touch. Spiby was my maiden name. I went to Broughton Secondary Modern after Sacred Trinity. Lovely to contribute to a site like this, there must be thousands of Salfordians who have memories of when Salford was a place that you were proud to belong to. Regards, Moira.

Hi Moira, not sure if I know you... what year was it that you went to Broughton modern school? Marion x

RE: RE: Salford Childhood

Hello Moira, you have certainly brought back fond memories for me. I lived on Great Slowes Street, Lower Broughton. My parents both died when I was 14 years old. I also went to Sacred Trinity School and remember Canon Hussey and his sister. I also remember a boy in my class called James Spiby, was he any relation? It's such a long time ago. I left the school in 1958 at the age of 15. I went to work at Boots in Manchester Royal Exchange. I left Salford in 1964 and now live near Skipton. I have had quite a sad life, through tragedies, but I hold on to my beloved memories of Salford, it really was a great place to grow up. xxx

RE: RE: Salford Childhood

Hiya Jean, You probably wont remember me but I am Moira and Jim Spiby's cousin, although I never went to Sacred Trinity all my closest friends and cousins did. Mac Norbury, Colin Hughes, Frank Knowles, Terry Murphy and many more. You may remember my sister Lilian Walker who went to Sacred Trinity Church and walked with the Scholars at Whitsun. It was good to hear from you, I hope you find some of your old school friends. Good luck for the future. Tom Walker

RE: RE: Salford Childhood

Hi Tom, thanks for getting in touch. I remember Mac Norbury, he was my boyfriend when I was about 12, if I remember, his mum and dad had a greengrocers. I also remember Colin Hughes and Frank Knowles, I am not sure about Linda, I must have known her. There was a Thomas Harrison, his mum and dad had a pub I think the Queens Arms on Chapel Street. I think his dad played rugby for Wigan. Have to close now, hope to hear from you again. Thank you. SORRY TOM, I called your sister Linda, I meant Lillian.

RE: RE: Salford Childhood

Hi Tom, I went to Blackfriars Rd school from 1947 to 1954 and Lillian was in my class. She used to conduct the percussion band. The music teacher was Mr Sharp. We had a good teacher there, Mr Rodgers. Years after my 3 children went there and I had many a laugh and good conversations with him. I still see some of the pupils in that class when I go to a yearly reunion. I used to go to your house with Lillian after school, if I remember rightly it was in King Street behind Blakes Motors. They were happy days. Best wishes, Margaret xxxx

RE: RE: Salford Childhood

Hi Les, I do remember your Keith, and your dad's shop, it was just down the road from the school. I was in the area yesterday on a visit to Manchester, I went and had a look at the old school. I was very happy at the school. In fact, your Keith took me on a date to the Rex cinema, I think it was, when I was about 14yrs lol. What are you doing these days? It was lovely to hear from you and I hope you can get back to me. Regards, Jean Edwards, was Fish.
