Yuk....1950's - 1960's.

I remember my mother buying a hot black pudding in Bury Market and giving half to me and the other half to my sister. It was absolutely freezing weather and it was used as much to keep our hands warm as for food. I can't even bear the smell of it now. Then, we lived in Devonshire Road, opposite the playing fields. I remember trying to get to St. Johns Primary School and the fog being so thick, we literally could not see the pavement at our feet. I remember it as being dirty, grey and wet - I have no good memories of Salford at all. Eventually, we moved to Worcester Street and I went to Higher Broughton School for Girls on Cheetham Hill Road. I left in 1961 and went to Salford Tech for a year, on a scholarship. I left home at 17 and left Manchester at the same time. I never regretted it. I occasionally visit my oldest friend, who now lives in Partington, but I loathe the place so much, I rarely stay as long as I say I will. Last time, she drove me back to see the school - or what's left of it - it was being demolished and it looked so small! Worcester Street was also still there, unfortunately. I remember Salford as a miserable, nasty, ugly place and hopefully, I'll never, ever have to go back there again. And Manchester itself has changed so much that I have no idea where anything is any more. I cannot find a landmark to relate to. When I left I re-invented myself. New name, got rid of the accent, the whole nine-yards. I've now been down south for so long, my eldest son insists I'm an "honorary southerner". Oh! One good memory - in my teens, of spending evenings at the Cona Coffee Bar. It seemed like a different planet and without that, I think I would have gone mad.

You are probabely better off staying down south, you are not interested in your roots? Your parents gave you the best they could (in Salford), you got good education from a girls school and a Technical College (In Salford). You give me the impression that you have become a Southern SNOB. Just let me remind you that Salford holds a lot of history, lots of famouse people were born and bred in Salford and still live here today. I find it very sad when a Salford girl leaves to become a southern Hyacinth. Salford people are the salt of the earth and I think you should be proud to be a Salfordian.

For your information and before you dismiss me as a "southern snob", bear in mind that affection for a place is, inevitably, linked to whatever one experienced there.

I did not have "parents". I had a mother and a series of step-fathers, one of whom seriously sexually abused me for most of my early teenage years. My memories of that time and place are so painfull that even now, almost 50 years afterwards, it is painful to recall them.

And in those days, there were no "counsellors" nor anyone else that I, a young and ignorant girl, could go to for help. Good God, I didn't even know the words to describe what that man was doing to me!

It seems to me that your view is that of an inverted snob, passionate to make sure that everyone is aware of your "roots".

See how easy it is to bad mouth a stranger without having any idea of what thier life was like? It is people like you that made me glad I left.

What a snob, I left Salford many years ago but still have many lovely memories of the people and places of my youth.l I feel sorry for your parents, you must have been a big disappointment to them and hurt them badly by your thoughtless ways, changing your name! Really, stay down south.
