Life In Somerton

A Memory of Salford.

I was born in Butleigh Hospital near Somerton in 1968 and lived in Somerton from then until 1990. My Grandparents Ted and Elsie used to be the landlord and landlady of the Globe Inn. In 1974 my Granfer passed away and my nan moved to Weymouth. Whilst they ran the pub we used to supply the beer tent for local gymkhanas. Somerton had seven pubs and seven churches at that time. I was Christened at St Michael's by the Reverend Budget. I attend the infant school on Etsome Terrace and then Monteclefe Juniors before the dreaded move to Huish Episcopi Comprehensive. I was a member of the Cubs then the Boys Brigade. I remember Mortimers bakers next to the Globe, the deli next to the White Hart, Jones Book Shop and Longmires Off licence. I remeber Coopers haberdashers and Alan Ball Estate Agents. I remember three butchers, Overt Locks the hardware shop and Coopers fish and Chips. So much has changed in Somerton when I go back and visit and I never see any familiar faces.
