Is This The Watch Tower

View From Tobys Hill c1955

I wonder if anyone can tell me if the tall black object in the distance in this photo is the coastguard watch tower which was at the top of Sea Lane throught the war and into the sixties or seventies. My grandfather was an auxiliary coastguard at Saltfleet during the war before moving to Donna Nook. My sister and I spent many holidays with my grandparents in South Somercotes and for some reason the coastguard tower remains an abiding image for us but we have no pictures of it. When I returned to Saltfleet a few years ago after an abscence of nearly 30 years I was struck by how the once sandy beach has changed totally and is now green!

I am doing some research into the Saltfleet coastguards and may have some info for you.

RE: RE: is This The Watch Tower

Hi Peter, I would love any info you may have - my sister and I recently came across a notebook written by my grandad( Harold John Waters - known as Dick) which details some of his 'watches' at Saltfleet. I suppose you haven't got a photo of the coastguard box - we would so much like to see one again. My mum (Dick's daughter) died last month and we were looking through all the old photos hoping to come across one, but no luck. I do have a rather splendid picture of my grandad in his uniform though I don't know the date, and he moved to Donna Nook after the war. Hoping to hear from you again.

RE: RE: is This The Watch Tower

Hi I was originally from Saltfleet & my Dad (Harold Holmes nick named TINY) is still living there, aged 91. He has just confirmed that the building you are enquiring about was the watch tower for the Air Force inconnection with the bombing range not the coast guard. The coast guard tower was more to the Haven side of Saltlfleet.
Having just spoken to him he remembers your grandad's name & I beleive my great uncle, Jim Hyde may have been a serving member of the coast guard at the same time.
