Norfolk memories
Jacob Herrman Fuoss
Late 1880-90? my great grandfather was a teacher at Gresham School. We would love to know when he taught there and where he lived. Thank you for the pictures, most interesting.
Holt And Salthouse Memories
I was stationed at West Beckham next to Bodham on the road to Holt. I have lovely memories of a lovely place and friendly folk, at least the girls were. They said there was a shortage of men in Norfolk, I think they were trying to get hitched tom someone out of the area. I know some RAF mates got married and are still happy, so I think it was the happy go lucky nature of the younger generation. The laundry girls must have known us as they laundered all of our kit, I believe it was next to the post office. I remember taking some young ladies to the cinema, now defunct. There were no cars then, it was bikes or Shank's pony. I even remember taking a beautiful young lady home near the railway station but it was so dark I could not find the house at a later date, much to my sorrow. I played football for Holt and had happy days there, especially in the Feathers and the... Read more

My Mum Grace Leeder.
I have a few memories of Hindringham, I was born in Binham but my mum was born at Folly farm Hindringham the youngest of nine children. Sadly she is no longer with us, she often used to tell us about her childhood. She had to walk to the village school, sometimes the dog went with her then made it's own way home. She told me she used to take the cows to graze along the road when she was young. Her father was very strict and she was sent to bed sometimes with no tea,but her mother used to sneak something up to her when he went out. She often told us about the time she was chased by a bull, she frightened me, to this day I am terrified of them! When she married my dad Cyril Wyer she moved to Binham. Every year we would go to Hindringham sports, taking a picnic, it was a lot of fun. We used to visit aunt Jessie and... Read more
Names of Lifeboatmen....
The gentleman laying on the ground in the front is my great grandfather John 'Teapot' West. He was a fisherman and lifeboatman but also well known for being a 'Fisherman Evangelist'. Together with William Craske and William Long he was a Methodist Preacher for over 50 years. They travelled throughout the county preaching and after visitors heard them they appeared at rallies in such places as London, Birmingham and Liverpool. These fishermen/lifeboatmen were strong, brave and somewhat exceptional men. There is a phrase used which I think fits them beautifully - 'Iron Men in Wooden Boats'. Pictured from left: 1. Henry 'Joyful' West 2. Wilson Able (with pipe) 3. Grice (in the background - unsure of Christian name) 4. 'Brighams' Bishop 5. 'Joyful' West (father of Henry - No 1) 6. John 'Sparrow' Hardingham (Young Lad) 7. John 'Rook' Reynolds 8. 'Potter' Hardingham (leaning on boat - father of John - No 6) 9. 'Fiddy' West (seated) 10. John 'Teapot' West (laying on ground). Fishermen nearly all had nicknames.... Read more
The Beach
When I look at these old photos, Sheringham has not changed that much, it's very strange though seeing the old Grand Hotel. I used to take the ponies round the roundabout as a young child to earn money during the summer. The water trough is still there but full of flowers instead of horses' noses.
Grand Hotel
I have just obtained a print of Sheringham promenade with a building on the left on top of a hill. I searched through these photos and came across the Grand Hotel - and that is the building in my picture. The date is 1890s. Does anyone know if this building still stands and if so is it still a hotel, or something else?
Thank you.
