Engagement Party

Grange And Links Hotel c1955
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

My husband & I will be moving to the area in July 2006 to retire from Scunthorpe after 34 years and remember our engagement party at the Grange & Links in 1971 it was a lovely evening enjoyed by all our  friends we came from Louth on a coach, we were looked after very well by all the staff, we hope to visit the Hotel again.
What super times we had in this area.

Holidays at Sandilands.

My late father used to rent an apartment in a large house opposite the 'pullover' where we would stay for some 2-3 weeks each summer from about 1949-1955. I remember that the lady who owned the house had a large black Labrador who used to love playing on the beach with me and he would dig very large holes in the sand. On one occasion we actually stayed at the Grange & Links Hotel and one of the maids had to find my mother in the dining room because I was terrified of the Daddy Long Legs that were flying around my bedroom. My parents divorced in the mid 1950s and we stopped having holidays at Sandilands until my mum's sister and husband bought a bungalow on Kipling Drive. They later sold this and had another bungalow built on Grange Road. They remained there until their deaths and I have not been back to Sandilands since 1982. I am now in my 63rd year but my memories of Sandilands still... Read more

The Wrong Date

High Street c1955
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

This photographs brings back many happy memories as I was brought up in the first white house to the right of the picture (now Watson's Hardware Store but then Cory's).

The tree shown standing on the corner of Cromer Avenue and High Street was certainly not there after the 1953 flood. It may well have been there before but probably not prior to 1950 as the shops were not built on the front of he house (32 High Street or Dallington) until then.

If anybody wants to contact me about this, my email address is disaster@globalnet.co.uk

Nigel Cory

Bohemia Caravan Site

This was the year my Grandma & Grandad bought a Bluebird Caravan, which they sited on the Bohemia Caravan Site. Just over from the sea top this caravan was the beginning of many happy holidays to be spent at Sutton-on-Sea. Bohemia was lovely, always tidy, flower beds planted - even if there were gas mantles to be lit, water to be fetched and the toilet/shower block over the way. The entire atmosphere of this site was lovely, and Sutton-on-Sea always a delightful place to visit - there will always be fond memories of Bohemia.

Camelot Court History

My grandma and grandad moved to Sutton on Sea. They bought a brand new bungalow at Camelot Court, I have photos of the bungalow being built. I have since been left the bungalow and my parents have now also moved to Sutton to a new bungalow.

I am interested in the history of Camelot Court. I understand that Camelot Court and Garend were built on the site of a large house and I remember Stable Cottage at Camelot Court being built and the old stables knocked down. I also remember a large old building where Doulton Court now stands, I went in there once as a child though I was always told not to! There were rows of beds and painted pictures on the walls for children, it looked like a strange  large hospital ward

Does anyone have information about these topics, I am really interested.

Norton Motorcycle

Hello. I am trying to trace a Norton es2 500cc motorcycle, registration unknown. It was sold new about July, August onwards 1950, from G. O . Trentholm, Station road, Sutton on Sea. If any person knows any information I would be pleased, as I am restoring it, thanks. John Thomason, email: j.hossthomason@yahoo.co.uk

Holidays With The Family

Radio Holiday Bungalows c1955

I remember as a child in the early to mid 1960's taking many family holidays here in these wonderful bungalows. We spent many a day when it was raining playing Dominoes or Ludo as a family. My elder brother used to catch eels in the dyke that ran alongside of this place. I was very squeamish when he returned with them, thankfully they were never served up for tea. I have happy memories of going on holiday here from Sutton in Ashfield. They were wonderful times and I have a couple of photos that I will load up if I can. I have no idea what has happened to these bungalows now. Any ideas? Please let me know. Thank You Gina X
