RE: RE: The Cottages on The Side Known as St Athreda
I remember while being at Oak Bank, being taken to the cafe in Seal, I think it was called the Copper Kettle, for afternoon tea. My mother was allowed to visit me once a month to take me out for a few hours. I have many happy memories of being at Oak Bank. We had a lovely matron who used to teach us girls to polka in her sitting room in the evening. She also used to knit us bedsocks, I suffered with chilblains and I loved the socks she knitted for us.
As an older girl (9 hrs) we had the job of darning the sock for the whole school while our teacher read us Enid Blyton stories. That is where I found my love of Enid Blyton books.
We spend most of our time outdoors, indeed it was called Oak Bank Open Air School. I also found my love of gardening when I discovered a forgotten part of the garden and decided to call it my own and started clearing the weeds away from it.
Our education was mostly nature studies and darning socks and I enjoyed the walks in the woods to collect chesnuts.
I also had the job of preparing the potatoes for the next day, scrubbing them and a reward was a mug of very black cocoa and a piece of cheese for supper.
I could go on and on. Is there anyone out there who was at Oak Bank during this time? I should love to hear from you.

I was also at Oak Bank school from the age of five and a half for about 2 years (1956-1958) and am trying to find info about the place and the area.
