Sevenoaks memories

Bat and Ball railway station near Sevenoaks

Sevenoaks, Cricket on the Green c1960

My wife, Elizabeth, and I bought a house in Sevenoaks when we married in 1971 and had nearly five happy years living just to the north of the town, close to Bradbourne Park lakes before business forced us to move away. I remember my daily commute by train to work at the Bank of England in the City and having experienced awful crowded and late trains from Sevenoaks station, I decided to travel on the other line from the Bat and Ball station not far from the cricket ground! This took me to Blackfriars or Holborn Viaduct stations in London and the journey was a lot more comfortable. Elizabeth had an easier journey to work as she started a new job ...read more here

Family connections.

Sevenoaks, St Johns 1959

One of my brothers worked at the fish shop 'Packman's' next to the greengrocers and the lady with the pushchair and small child is my sister-in-law and her children.

Extracts From Sevenoaks & Kent books

Sevenoaks, High Street and Church 1900

This country town is close to one of the noblest houses in Kent - the Jacobean home of the Sackvilles, Knole. St Nicholas's Church (left) has a 90ft-high tower and turret with a cupola. William Sevenoke, who is described as a foundling discovered in the hollow of a tree 500 years ago, built the grammar school in 1432 and almshouses atop Sevenoaks Hill.

Leeds Castle, 1892

This view looks towards the Gloirette; on the left can be seen the main building. In this picture, the magnificent location of the Castle, surrounded by its enchanting lake, is clearly seen.

Leeds Castle, 1892

A superb view of the main building and the Gloirette. Although the Castle appears to be medieval, its turrets and battlements in fact date from a rebuilding in the late 1820s. The lake is part of the river Len.

Maidstone, Leeds Castle c1955

The main building dominates the picture, together with the Gloirette on the left. At this time, the castle was still in private hands. Today, the scene is altogether cleaner and tidier, but perhaps lacks the charm shown in this photograph.

Leeds Castle, 1898

A wonderful view of the Castle, showing to advantage the main building and the Gloirette, as well as the Maiden Tower, just visible on the left hand side as the lake swings round to the Gate Tower. Unusually for photographs of the time, the clouds are seen to good effect.
