Stories of North Creake

My grandfather, John Arnett, was the teacher at the North Creake school for many years.  Four of his sons came to Canada.  When I was a little girl growing up in distant Saskatchewan the uncles would gather and tell marvellous tales of living in North Creake.  I have a photo of the grandmother riding her tricycle, of the brothers in front of the school house during World War I.  When my grandfather died there was a story in the Norwich newspaper of how he passed on the Earl's frock coat to the newly elected Labour Member of Parliament. (The Earl was in the habit of giving Grandfather items of clothing for the poor as many were in need in the 1930's ...read more here

1961 & 1962

The years were 61 and 62. I was the son of an American Serviceman stationed at the Air Base. My father chose to send me to the local elementary school. I was a tan kid from Florida starting the 1st grade In England! My parents would laugh as they heard my speech change and I become one of the local kids. My first grade teacher was Mrs. Hunt. I used to play at a place called "The Rec". It was a magical time in my life and the primary education I recieved there was of great advantage to me. I hope to return someday for a visit.

Extracts From Fakenham & Norfolk books

Fakenham, the War Memorial 1921

Some splendid Georgian brick buildings surround Fakenham’s square. Eighteenth-century architects, usually local men, worked from standard pattern books, yet managed to achieve townscapes of individual character and harmony.

Fakenham, Norwich Street c1955

Norwich Street reflects Fakenham’s essential character. None of its brick buildings is outstanding, yet the total effect is one of pleasing harmony. Many of the shops have retained their Victorian detailing. The postman is delivering from his two-wheeled basket cart.

Fakenham, Norwich Street c1955

Looking west along the High Street, we see buildings which are characteristic of North Norfolk: flints set in mortar, with brick facings.

Castle Rising, the Castle 1898

This is one of the largest keeps in the country, richly decorated inside with a well-preserved medieval kitchen. The castle is built on a massive defensive earthwork, giving unrivalled views across the land and out to sea.
