Fishing in the Harbour

Gorleston, the Quay c1955

We use to fish in the Quay by going down to the water by the little jetty shown in the picture. I fished with a small wined up fishing line.
Must have been about 9/10m years old.
The only fish I court I couldn't take of the hook because it wriggled to much, never fished since!!

Serving the past

Great Yarmouth, Regent Road 1896

I have recently discovered, from the 1881 Census, that my great-grandmother was, with her younger sister, in domestic service to the family of Henry Stone at no.35 Regent Road.He is described as 'organist and music teacher'. I would be thrilled to have any more information about the family or the house itself. Does it appear in this picture?
Is the boy with the goat-cart delivering something?

Blackfriars

Great Yarmouth, Blackfriars Tower 1891

I too had an aunt who lived there.  In its time, it has had a house on top of the tower and a house on the wall attached to the left.  The house on top by then had disappeared.
Through the archway was a line of small cottages with large front gardens.  This was known as Adam and Eve's Gardens.  I used to go through here to get to Friars Lane where my grandmother lived. Further to my previous statement, this tower whilst located in Blackfriars Rd, is the south east tower, Blackfriars Tower is the next tower to the south and it is round in shape, this tower is shaped like a D. THIS WAS WHERE MY AUNT RESIDED.

Extracts From Hopton & Norfolk books

Hopton, the Holiday Camp c1955

Hopton is a diminutive village resort on the A12 just south of Great Yarmouth. Here holiday makers could enjoy the quiet attractions of the ‘Constitutional Holiday Camp’ well away from the bustle and bright lights of its noisier and bigger neighbour. Every effort has been made to intensify the holiday atmosphere: there are ‘cabin’ style chalets daubed with bright colours, rustic seats, flower-bedded lawns and plenty of beach space.

Wymondham, the Green Dragon, Church Street c1965

On the road leading to the priory gateway, this fine 14th-century, jettied, timber-frame building may have been built for visitors to the abbey. The period petrol pumps have now gone.

Wymondham, Market Cross c1965

The spacious market-place was established by 1130, but the present timber-framed ‘cross’ building dates from 1617. It replaced the original after yet another Norfolk fire gutted the town centre.

North Walsham, Bactonwood Mill, Spa Common c1955

This was the former water mill. Smartened up, with its brickwork painted, the mill is now a house. It was powered by the head waters of the River Ant, canalised in 1826 as the North Walsham and Dilham Canal.
