Bird Family
Hello My name is Chris Dann I am a direct decendant of Frank Gilbert Bird of Honingham, England and I am looking for decendants of his brothers and sisters. Frank had an older brother named Charles Edward Bird born in 1893, a younger brother named Cyril Victor Bird born in 1900 and a younger sister named Olive born in 1892. Olive married a Stanley Shickle and they lived in East Dereham. Frank also had a younger sister named Kathleen born in 1904, Harvey George born in 1906, Eric Perival 1908 and Melville Eve born in 1910. The family grew up at Tollgate Farm and sometime after the 1901 census the name of the farm was changed to the Grange Farm.

school days
First school London Road Infants, a short time in Scotland and then the Church Infants, each school day walking from Theatre Street (two doors up from 'The Cherry Tree') through the market place and down Church Street. I moved on to the primary at the top of Theatre Street and eventually Crown Road. While at Theatre Street I would occasionally return to the bottom of Church Street to the 'rag and bone' yard with rabbit skins to supplement my pocket money.
I remember some 10 years later when I rode my motorbike from Theatre Street to the chemists at the top end of Church Street, made my purchase then walked out thinking of other things. It ...read more here

My hometown
I was born in 1928 at Woodhill, Gressenhall and moved to Dereham at the age of 6yrs and left when I married some 20 years later. It was a happy childhood in spite of the war years, in fact it added to the excitement of those years, dashing out to crashed planes, collecting shrapnel, army badges etc and of course the generous handouts from the American troops of chocolate, gum, cigs plus the grub when we went on to the bases at Shipdham and Wendling, bearing in mind that our food was rationed.
Then the Evacuees came to Dereham. I was one of the helpers that walked the children to their new homes.

On the road leading to the priory gateway, this fine 14th-century, jettied, timber-frame building may have been built for visitors to the abbey. The period petrol pumps have now gone.

This exquisite old timbered inn once belonged to the priory. Its jettied upper storey projects out over the latticed windows below. It is a tragedy of our century that the elevations of many of our finest buildings are defaced by the necessities of modern life. If only Mr Bird could have sited his garage elsewhere!

This pleasant market town sits on the road from Thetford to Norwich, and was once a resting place for pilgrims – it still has a fine Guild Chapel dedicated to St Thomas ŕ Becket.This well-maintained timbered market cross was built in 1618. It provides a welcome resting place for shoppers and visitors. The modern shop fronts in the town hide many old medieval houses. Robert Kett, who led a rebellion in Norfolk during 1549, was born in Wymondham; he held the first meeting of peasants on Wymondham common.

Nine miles south-west of Norwich, Wymondham is noted for its fine priory church. The church was founded in 1107 and was the cause of bitter rivalry between town and prior, culminating in each faction building its own 15th-century bell towers.

This pleasant market town sits on the road from Thetford to Norwich, and was once a resting place for pilgrims - it still has a fine Guild Chapel dedicated to St Thomas a Becket. The town is renowned for the number and quality of its historic houses, and is blessed with an ancient abbey, founded by William d’Albini in 1107. The half-timbered octagonal market cross, resting on timber stilts and stone arches, was built in 1605 after a fire destroyed a good proportion of the town. It has an outside wooden stair leading to a reading room. Crowning the imposing pyramid roof is a weathercock.
